UNIT 4: REMEMBERING THE PAST
COMMUNICATION
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge and skills
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Learn and practice two ways of expressing thanks and responding to thanks in everyday English.
- Read for specific information about how families keep their traditions alive.
- Talk and present about how their own families observe customs and preserve family traditions.
2. Competences
General competences:
- Self-control and independent learning: actively engage in reading texts and reflecting on personal family traditions.
- Communication and collaboration: work effectively in pairs and groups to role-play, interview, and present.
Specific competences:
- Use appropriate communicative functions to thank someone and respond politely.
- Synthesize information to ask and answer questions about cultural and familial observances (anniversaries, festivals, holidays).

Activity 3: Read the passage and complete the table
a. Objective: To give students some practice in reading for specific information; to provide students with information about ways of keeping traditions alive.
b. Content: Students read a short passage and categorize information into Anniversaries, Festivals, and Holidays.
c. Product: A correctly completed table.

Activity 5: Work in groups, and give a short talk about one of the things in 4 that you and your family do to preserve traditions
a. Objective: To give students more practice in talking about what their families do to preserve their family traditions.
b. Content: Students prepare and deliver a short speech about a specific tradition their family preserves (E.g. birthdays).
c. Product: A short, coherent spoken presentation by students.

a. Objective: To apply the vocabulary and speaking skills in a communicative, real-life context via a survey and report.

c. Product: A completed survey table and an oral report presented to the class.
d. Organization:
Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks
- Instead of writing on draft paper, teacher asks each group to create a quick digital survey form (E.g. Google Forms) with questions like: What is a special tradition in your family?, How do you keep it alive?, etc.
- Task: Distribute the link to classmates, interview them to fill out the form, and make sure to thank them after the interview using the structures learned (E.g. “Thanks a lot for sharing”).
Step 2: Students perform learning tasks
- Students quickly design the form and send the link to their peers.
- Students interview each other, input the data into the form, and practice the “Thanking” expressions.
- The teacher observes, ensuring students speak English and practice the “Thanking” expressions.
Step 3: Reporting and Discussion
- Teacher invites 2 – 3 groups to project their auto-generated Google Forms summary charts (pie charts/graphs) onto the smart TV and give a short oral report.
Example report: I interviewed Lan. Her family has a tradition of making Banh Chung for Tet. They keep it alive by gathering all family members on the 28th of December...
- The class listens and can ask follow-up questions.
Step 4: Evaluation
- Teacher praises students for their active participation, fluency, proper use of thanking expressions, and excellent data collection skills.
- Teacher summarizes the lesson and assigns homework.
