UNIT 1: LEISURE TIME

LESSON 4: SKILLS 1

 

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 

  • Read for general ideas and specific information about leisure activities teenagers do with their family members.
  • Talk about the leisure activities they usually do with their family members.

2. Competences

General competences: 

  • Self-control and independent learning: read and share personal opinions with partners and the teacher.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the reading and speaking tasks. 

Specific competences: 

  • Skim to find the main idea and scan to locate specific details in a text.
  • Practice reporting group members' answers to the class.

READING

Activity 1: Look at the pictures. What activities can you see?

a. Objective: To activate Ss' knowledge of the topic of the reading text.

b. Content: Students look at the pictures in the book and identify the activities shown.

c. Product: Students correctly name the activities in pictures a, b, and c.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Have Ss look at the pictures in the book or show the pictures on a slide.

- Teacher encourages students to use an AI image recognition application (e.g., Google Lens) on their tablets/smartphones to scan the pictures and verify the activities.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students observe the pictures and brainstorm the activities.

- Students use the AI image recognition tool to scan the pictures and identify the visual objects/activities.

- If time allows, teacher asks Ss to describe the pictures (who they can see and what the people are doing).

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on some students to answer aloud.

- Other students can comment or offer alternative opinions. 

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the correct answers.

- Tell Ss that they are going to read a text about leisure activities that Trang does with her family members.

b. Content: Students read the text and answer two multiple-choice questions regarding the main idea and vocabulary.

c. Product: Students' correct answers for the two questions.

Activity 3: Read the text again and answer the questions. 

a. Objective: To help Ss develop the skill of reading for specific information (scanning).

b. Content: Students read the text again to find details to answer five WH-questions.

c. Product: Students' accurate short answers based on the text.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Ask Ss what they are going to do.

- Have Ss share how to do this exercise.

- Briefly tell them the steps: read the questions, underline the keywords in each question, locate the keywords in the text, and find the information to answer.

- Ask Ss to repeat the steps if necessary.

- Students use a shared Google Doc to note down their short answers and digitally highlight the clues they found in the text.

- Ask Ss to do the exercise individually.

a. Objective: To help Ss prepare ideas to talk about the leisure activities they do with their family members.

b. Content: Students work in groups of four, asking and answering three specific questions about family activities, and recording the answers in a table.

- Representatives use their devices to input their group's main activities into the live poll.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher shows the answers in front of the class.

- Discuss as a class which activities were mentioned the most overall.

- Comment on Ss' answers, focusing on structure, fluency, and vocabulary.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To help students apply the lesson's topic to their real life at home in an engaging and creative way.

b. Content: Students carry out a home-based assignment: "Family Leisure Photo Diary". 

c. Product: A printed photo or a digital picture accompanied by a short descriptive paragraph.

d. Organization: 

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher explains the homework assignment.

- Task: Over the weekend, do a leisure activity with at least one family member. Take a photo of this moment. Write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences) in English describing the activity. Include: What the activity is, who you did it with, and how it made you feel.

- Teacher instructs students to create their "Family Leisure Photo Diary" using digital design tools (e.g., Canva). Furthermore, teacher requires students to use an AI writing assistant (e.g., Grammarly or ChatGPT) to check their grammar and refine their descriptive paragraph before submitting the digital file.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students write down the homework instructions in their notebooks.

- At home, students use digital design tools to combine their photo and text, and manage the AI writing assistant to proofread their work.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher instructs students that they will bring their photos and paragraphs to the next class. They will do a "Gallery Walk" to show their Photo Diaries to their classmates.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher summarizes what they have learnt in the lesson.

- Have Ss look at the objectives written on the board at the beginning of the lesson and tick the objectives they have learnt.
