UNIT 2: LIFE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

SKILLS 1

 

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 

  • Understand and activate their knowledge of the topic.
  • Remember some adjectives that are often used to describe scenes and scenery in the countryside.
  • Improve their knowledge of vocabulary related to life in a village in Viet Nam.
  • Improve their skill of reading for specific information.
  • Prepare ideas and practise talking about a village or town where they live or which they know.

2. Competences

  • Self-control and independent learning: actively read and share personal opinions. 
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks. 

Specific competences:

  • Read for specific information about rural life.
  • Talk fluently about their living environment or a known village.

  • Digital collaborative board (Padlet/Mentimeter), Gen AI account (ChatGPT/Gemini).

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson and to lead into the new lesson.

b. Content: Teacher organizes an engaging "Two Truths and One Lie" brainstorming game about life in the countryside to spark students' interest.

c. Product: Students' creative statements and their correct identification of false statements.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- T provides a QR code/link to a collaborative digital board (e.g., Padlet).

- Ask each student to write down three statements about life in the countryside, with two being true and one being false.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Ss use their smartphones/tablets to scan the QR code, access the digital board, and type their three statements.

- The teacher observes, guides, and supports the students.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Put Ss into pairs.

- Ask them to exchange the statements with their partners.

- Each student has to identify which statement of his / her partner's is false.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher invites a few pairs to share their most interesting statements to the class.

- Introduce the objectives of the lesson.

- Write the objectives in the top-left corner of the board.

b. Content: Students discuss what they can see in the picture and identify adjectives to describe it.

c. Product: Correct vocabulary and selected adjectives describing the countryside picture.

Activity 2: Read the text about life in a village in Viet Nam. Match the highlighted words in the text with their meanings.

a. Objective: To improve Ss' knowledge of vocabulary related to life in a village in Viet Nam. To improve Ss' skill of reading for specific information.

b. Content: Students read the passage, find highlighted words, and match them with their meanings.

c. Product: Students correctly match the vocabulary words.

d. Organization:

- Ask Ss to work individually to read the passage and find the highlighted words.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Have Ss read aloud the highlighted words.

- Ss type the words into their digital dictionaries, read the definitions, and match the highlighted words with their meanings in the table.

- Remind them to use the context to help them.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Correct their pronunciation if needed.

- Check the answers as a class.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the final correct answers.

a. Objective: To help Ss prepare ideas for the next activity.

b. Content: Students make notes about a village or town where they live or which they know.

c. Product: Students' structured notes containing information about a village/town.

- Ask Ss to think about a village or town where they live or which they know (its name, location, scenery, special features) and the people living there (how they live, what they often do, how they get along with each other).

- T shows how to use an AI tool to generate a structured outline (e.g., prompt: "Create an outline to describe my village, including name, location, scenery, and people's activities").

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Ss interact with the AI tool, observe the generated outline, and then input their own real personal ideas into their digital note-taking app based on that structure.

- The teacher observes, guides, and supports the students.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher checks if students have enough ideas and vocabulary to prepare for their speaking task.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher ensures all students have completed their notes before moving on to the speaking activity.
