LESSON 7: COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE / CLIL

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Listen to and provide model conversations in which speakers express pleasure and respond to it.
• Review and appropriately use idiomatic expressions for expressing pleasure (e.g., I'm on top of the world, on cloud nine, over the moon).
• Read for specific information to learn about the lives of three famous queens in world history (Cleopatra VII, Elizabeth I, Catherine II).
• Relate the knowledge of famous global queens to the history of their own country by discussing famous women in Vietnamese history.

2. Competences

General competences:

• Self-control and independent learning: Read actively and synthesize information into a comparison table.
• Communication and collaboration: Work effectively in pairs to role-play conversations and in groups to discuss historical figures.

2. PRESENTATION

EVERYDAY ENGLISH – Expressing pleasure and responding to it.

Activity 1: Listen and complete the conversations with the expressions in the box. Then practise them in pairs.

a. Objective: To provide model conversations in which speakers express pleasure, and respond to it, and to review expressions for expressing pleasure and responding.

b. Content: Students listen to the recording, complete the blanks with the expressions in the box, and practice the conversations.

c. Product: Students correctly fill in the blanks and practice reading the dialogue with correct intonation.

d. Organization:

Activity 2: Work in pairs. Use the models in 1 to make similar conversations for these situations. One of you is A, the other is B. Use the expressions on page 17 to help you.

a. Objective: To help students practice expressing pleasure and responding to it using idiomatic expressions.

b. Content: Students work in pairs to role-play conversations based on two given situations using useful expressions.

c. Product: Students can successfully create and perform short dialogues using the target language.

CULTURE/CLIL – Queens of the world

Activity 1: Read the following text and complete the comparison table on page 18. 

a. Objective: To help students learn about the lives of three famous queens in world history.

b. Content: Students read a text about Cleopatra VII, Elizabeth I, and Catherine II and complete a comparison table.

c. Product: A completed comparison table with accurate details from the text.

d. Organization:

Activity 2: Work in groups. Discuss the questions. 

a. Objective: To help students relate what they have learnt about the famous queens to the history of their own country.

b. Content: Students work in groups to discuss female rulers or famous women in Vietnamese history.

c. Product: Students share knowledge and facts about Vietnamese heroines.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the target language (expressions of pleasure) and the cultural content (historical figures) through basic, focused exercises.

b. Content: Students complete one worksheet mission consisting of two straightforward tasks designed to reinforce learning without overwhelming them with excess vocabulary.

c. Products: Students' correct answers on the worksheet.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To help students apply the lesson's themes (admiration of famous figures and expressing positive sentiments) into a creative, independent context.

b. Content: Students carry out a take-home writing task: "Historical Heroine Profile".

c. Product: A short written profile (50-70 words) about a Vietnamese woman they admire.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher assigns the homework project: Choose one famous woman from Vietnamese history or modern society that you deeply admire (e.g., Vo Thi Sau, Nguyen Thi Binh, or even a contemporary female scientist/athlete).

- Task: Write a short profile (about 5 sentences) explaining who she is, one major achievement she had, and write one sentence expressing how you feel about her achievements using an expression of pleasure learned today (e.g., I am over the moon when I read about her success).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students write down the instructions in their notebooks.

- Students use digital design tools (e.g., Canva, PowerPoint) to create a visually appealing digital profile poster of the heroine.

- Students use an AI writing assistant to help refine their English text or an AI image generator to generate an illustrative portrait for their profile (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini,...).

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher explains that in the next lesson, 3-4 students will be randomly selected to read their profiles to the class.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher summarizes the core values of today's lesson (learning how to properly celebrate success and acknowledging the great women of history).
