LESSON 2: LANGUAGE

 

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 

  • Recognise and practise words with the diphthongs /eɪ/ and /əʊ/.
  • Understand and use words and phrases related to life events.
  • Distinguish and correctly use the past simple and the past continuous.

2. Competences

General competences: 

  • Self-control and independent learning: actively listen and complete individual tasks.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs to discuss life stories and complete speaking tasks.

  • Pronounce the diphthongs /eɪ/ and /əʊ/ accurately in isolation and in context.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP 

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge, introduce the theme of "Life Stories," and review basic past tenses in an engaging way.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a quick guessing activity called "Who is the Hero?". 

c. Product: Students successfully guess the famous figure and recognize the use of past tenses.

d. Organization: 

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher displays a Padlet QR code on the smart TV containing 3 short clues.

+ Clue 1: He was born in 1890 in Nghe An.

+ Clue 2: While he was traveling abroad, he worked many different jobs to find a way to save the country.

+ Clue 3: He read the Declaration of Independence in 1945. 

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students use their smartphones to scan the QR code, read the clues on their screens, and quickly type their guesses into the Padlet interface.

- The teacher observes and encourages students to guess quickly. 

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Real-time answers appear on the smart TV as a dynamic word cloud. Students discuss the most prominent answer.

- Expected answer: Uncle Ho / Ho Chi Minh. 

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the answer, praises the students, and highlights the verbs used in the clues (was born, was traveling, worked, read).

- Teacher leads into the lesson: Today, we will learn how to talk about the life stories of people we admire, focusing on correct pronunciation, vocabulary for life events, and how to accurately use past tenses.

Activity 1: Listen and repeat. Then practise saying the words.

a. Objective: To help Ss recognise and practise words with the diphthongs /eɪ/ and /əʊ/.

b. Content: Students learn the spellings of the sounds, listen to the recording, and repeat.

c. Product: Students can correctly pronounce the given words containing /eɪ/ and /əʊ/.

Activity 2: Work in pairs. Underline the words that contain the /eɪ/ and /əʊ/ sounds. Listen and check. Then practise reading the whole text aloud.

c. Product: Correctly identified words with /eɪ/ and /əʊ/, and accurate reading of the text.

b. Content: Students complete one practice mission consisting of two straightforward tasks (gap fill for vocabulary, verb conjugation for grammar).

4. APPLICATION 

a. Objective: To help students apply the vocabulary and grammatical structures learned into a personal, real-life context at home.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Task: At home, interview a family member (parent, grandparent, or older sibling) about a specific, memorable event in their past.

- Write a short paragraph (about 4-5 sentences) about this event.

- Requirement: You must use at least ONE vocabulary phrase from today's lesson (e.g., had a difficult childhood, impressive achievements) AND correctly use both the Past Simple and Past Continuous at least once. 

- Teacher explicitly instructs on the ethical use of GenAI: Students may use GenAI (e.g., ChatGPT) to brainstorm interview questions or look up specific English terms, but they MUST write the final sentences themselves. Plagiarism is prohibited.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students take notes of the homework requirements.
