LESSON 4: SPEAKING

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Talk about the lives of two famous national heroes of Viet Nam (General Vo Nguyen Giap and Vo Thi Sau).
• Ask for and provide biographical information using appropriate past tense structures.
• Take notes and present a cohesive life story to the class.

2. Competences

• Self-control and independent learning: Read and extract key information from information cards.
• Communication and collaboration: Work effectively in pairs to exchange information and in groups to prepare presentations.

Specific competences:

• Formulate Wh-questions to gather missing biographical details.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' background knowledge, stimulate critical thinking, and lead directly into the lesson about two specific national heroes of Viet Nam.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a brief analytical activity called "Symbolic Connections" using iconic images related to the heroes.

c. Product: Students successfully identify the national heroes associated with the given symbols and briefly explain their historical connections in English.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher displays two images on the screen side-by-side:

+ Image 1: A blooming white Lecythis flower. (Hoa Lê-ki-ma)

+ Image 2: A rudimentary supply bicycle (xe đạp thồ) used during the resistance war against the French.

- Teacher asks students to work in pairs for 2 minutes to answer two questions:

1. Which famous national heroes do these objects remind you of?

2. What is the connection between the object and the hero?

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students observe the images, discuss with their partners, and recall their historical and cultural knowledge.

- Students use their smartphones to utilize AI image recognition tools (like Google Lens) or Generative AI chatbots to scan the images and quickly retrieve historical connections.

- The teacher walks around the class, encourages students to express their ideas in English, and provides vocabulary support if needed (e.g., campaign, sacrifice, symbolize).

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on a few pairs to share their answers with the class.

- Expected answers from students:

+ Image 1: It reminds us of Vo Thi Sau. The Lecythis flower is famously mentioned in a well-known song to symbolize her youth, bravery, and sacrifice at Con Dao Island.

+ Image 2: It reminds us of General Vo Nguyen Giap and the historic Dien Bien Phu campaign in 1954, where thousands of these bicycles were used to transport food and weapons for the army.

- Other students are encouraged to add more historical details or share their feelings about the images.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher praises students for their excellent historical knowledge and critical thinking.

- Teacher smoothly leads into the new lesson: You have successfully decoded the symbols. Today, we are going to dive deeper into the glorious life stories of these two exact figures: General Vo Nguyen Giap and Vo Thi Sau. Let's open your books to Lesson 4: Speaking.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Work in pairs. One of you is A, the other is B. A reads the information card about General Vo Nguyen Giap below. B reads the information card about Vo Thi Sau (next page). Use the glossary (page 147) to help you. 

a. Objective: To provide information and language input for the main speaking task.

b. Content: Students are assigned roles, read their specific information cards, and check the vocabulary.

c. Product: Students comprehend the biographical facts on their respective cards.

Activity 2: Work in pairs. A asks b questions to complete his/her card about Vo Thi Sau (next page). Then B does the same to complete his/her card about General Vo Nguyen Giap above. Then compare your notes.

a. Objective: To help students practice talking about, listening to, and taking notes about the life of a famous person.

b. Content: Students work in pairs, taking turns to ask and answer questions to fill in the missing information on their cards.

c. Product: Completed information cards for both heroes.

d. Organization:

Activity 3: Present the life stories

a. Objective: To give students an opportunity to present the life stories of two famous heroes cohesively.

b. Content: Students work in groups to prepare and deliver a presentation about one of the heroes.

c. Product: A short, structured oral presentation about General Vo Nguyen Giap or Vo Thi Sau.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the basic sentence structures and core vocabulary used when recounting a life story.

b. Content: Students complete one written mission consisting of two foundational tasks to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary used in the speaking activities.

c. Products: Students' correct written answers for the two tasks.

d. Organization:

Mission 1: Complete WORKSHEET 1 

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher distributes WORKSHEET 1 digitally via a live interactive platform (e.g., Liveworksheets or Google Forms).

- Teacher explains that the exercises focus on basic structures and essential vocabulary needed to talk about biographies.

- Teacher sets a time limit of 7 minutes.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students work individually on their devices to select and type the basic answers into the interactive worksheet.

- The teacher observes, ensuring students understand the basic requirements, and provides support if needed.
