LESSON 6: WRITING

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Synthesise and summarise information in order to write a biography of Walt Disney.
• Use fundamental vocabulary and sentence structures to describe life events, educational background, and achievements clearly.

2. Competences

• Communication and collaboration: Work in pairs to share information and provide peer feedback on writing drafts.

• Recall and select key information from a listening text.
• Synthesise and summarise information from two different sources logically.
• Practise writing a 180-word biography based on a provided outline.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' background knowledge on the logical structure of a biographical text and prepare them directly for the chronological writing task.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a "Paragraph Scramble" mission where students must arrange disconnected sentences into a logical, chronological biographical paragraph.

c. Product: Students correctly order the sentences (Chronological: Childhood -> Career -> Achievements -> Legacy). 

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher divides the class into pairs.

- Teacher explains that a strong biography must flow logically, usually in chronological order.

- Teacher displays 4 sentences about Walt Disney out of order via a projector/smart TV.

+ A. Throughout his career, he achieved great success, including winning a record 26 Oscars.

+ B. Walt Disney was born in Chicago in 1901 and discovered his love for drawing early on.

+ C. Even after his passing in 1966, his studio's work continues to inspire generations worldwide.

- Mission: Read the sentences and arrange them in the correct chronological order (1 to 4) to make a coherent paragraph.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students work in pairs to analyze the time markers and logical flow.

- Students use their smartphones/tablets to access an interactive platform (e.g., Padlet or Quizizz) via a QR code and collaborate digitally to arrange the scrambled sentences.

- The teacher observes, guiding students to identify keywords like "born", "career", "young man", and "passing".

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on a few pairs to give their sequence.

- Teacher asks students to explain their reasoning (Childhood/Birth -> Early Career -> Main Achievements -> Death/Legacy).

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the correct order (B -> D -> A -> C) and leads into the lesson: This chronological structure is exactly what you need to use when writing a biography. Today, we will learn how to synthesise facts from different sources to write a complete and well-structured biography of Walt Disney.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Work in pairs. Answer these questions, using the information from Listening. Write NG (Not Given) if you cannot find the answer.

a. Objective: To help Ss recall and select key information about Walt Disney's life from the Listening section.

b. Content: Students answer 7 questions using prior knowledge and write NG (Not Given) if the answer cannot be found.

c. Product: Students correctly identify the answered questions and the NG questions.

Activity 2: Read some facts about Walt Disney. Then work in pairs to answer all the questions in 1.

a. Objective: To help Ss find more useful information for writing Walt Disney's biography and to help Ss synthesise and summarise information from two different sources.

b. Content: Students read quick facts about Walt Disney to find answers for the previously identified NG questions.

c. Product: Students' correct answers for questions 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7.

d. Organization:

Activity 3: Write a biography (180 words) of Walt Disney for your school newspaper. Select and combine information from 1 and 2, and use the following outline and suggestions to help you.

a. Objective: To help Ss synthesise and summarise information from two different sources; To help Ss practise writing a biography of Walt Disney.

b. Content: Students use the collected information from Activity 1 and 2 to write a 180-word biography based on a suggested outline.

c. Product: Students' completed biography drafts.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To reinforce foundational vocabulary and sentence structures essential for writing biographies without overwhelming students with excessive new words.

b. Content: Students complete a straightforward mission consisting of 2 focused, non-game, non-multiple-choice tasks based on essential biographical verbs and basic sentence building.

c. Products: Correctly conjugated verbs in context and accurately constructed sentences.

d. Organization:

Mission 1: Complete WORKSHEET 1 

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks 

- Teacher distributes WORKSHEET 1 digitally via a live interactive platform (e.g., Liveworksheets or Google Forms).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students work individually on their devices to select and type the basic answers into the interactive worksheet.

- The teacher observes, ensuring students focus strictly on the foundational grammar and vocabulary, and provides support if necessary.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- The platform automatically grades the basic exercises.

- Teacher invites students to go to the board and write down their answers for Task 1 and Task 2.

- Other students cross-check with their own worksheets and provide corrections if needed.

Step 4: Evaluation
