I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Practise listening for main ideas and specific information about a city.
  • Develop ideas and discuss the impact of urban development on people's lives.
  • Practise reading for main ideas, specific information, vocabulary, referents, and inference about part-time jobs for students.
  • Practise writing a job application letter of 150-180 words.

2. Competences

General competences: 

  • Self-control, independent learning, communication, and collaboration through pair work and group discussions.

Specific competences: 

  • Effectively synthesize and apply vocabulary and grammatical structures related to urbanisation and career preparation in all four macro-skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing).

LISTENING

Activity 1: Listen to a talk about a city. What is it about? 

a. Objective: To help Ss practise listening for the main idea.

b. Content: Students listen to an audio track and choose the correct main idea from three options.

c. Product: Students' correct choice of the main idea.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Focus Ss' attention on the three phrases and check understanding.

- Explain that they will listen to a talk about a city and ask them to guess the answer.

- Play the recording (Tracks 40+41) from hoclieu.vn and encourage Ss to note down information.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students listen carefully and take notes in their notebooks.

- Students use a digital polling tool (e.g., Mentimeter or Slido) on their devices to submit their choice for the main idea.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Project the live polling results on the screen. Ask Ss to explain why they chose their answers and why B and C are incorrect.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Confirm the correct answer.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

SPEAKING

Activity 1: Work in pairs. Discuss the impact of urban development on people’s life and complete the following table. 

a. Objective: To help Ss develop ideas for the speaking task.

b. Content: Students work in pairs to discuss and complete a table regarding the positive and/or negative impacts of urban development on people's lives.

c. Product: Completed tables with relevant impacts.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Have Ss read through the instructions and the text in the table, and check their understanding.

- Put Ss in pairs and have them discuss the impact of urban development.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Ss discuss in pairs. Remind Ss that the impact can be positive and/or negative.

- Students prompt a Generative AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT/Gemini) to suggest economic and social impacts of urban development. They must critically filter the AI's output and select the most relevant points to add to their discussion table.

- Walk round the class to offer help if necessary.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Invite some pairs to present their completed table to the class.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Provide feedback and introduce the suggested answers.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Suggested answers:

- Growing population: Housing shortage, higher rents and home prices. Economic growth - more people enter the workforce, produce more goods and pay more taxes, which can be spent on healthcare and education.

- More schools and universities: More education opportunities.

- Expanded roads: Faster and safer journeys, however, new roads can be quickly filled to their capacity, causing pollution.

- More shops, restaurants...: Convenient shopping and eating out, but traditional markets may struggle to survive.

   

[6.2.NC1a]: Integrate Generative AI tools into the brainstorming workflow to generate ideas on urban impacts.

Activity 2: Discuss in groups. Which change in 1 do you think has the most  positive impact, and which one has the most negative impact on urban life? Then report the group’s answers to the class.

a. Objective: To give Ss an opportunity to take part in a group discussion, then report their discussion to the whole class.

b. Content: Students decide which change has the most positive/negative impact and prepare a summary report.

c. Product: Group reports presented to the class.

- Have Ss work in groups and discuss the impacts of urbanisation using the table in 1.

- Students synthesize their group's arguments into a digital mind map or a single presentation slide (using Canva/MindMeister) to visually support their report.

- Invite some groups to present their summaries to the class.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To connect the reading topic (benefits of part-time jobs) with real-world experiences, developing students' interviewing, information synthesizing, and report writing skills.

b. Content: Students conduct a mini-interview at home with someone they know about their past part-time job experience and write a short summary report.

c. Product: A short written report (100-150 words) summarizing the interviewee's real-life experiences.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher introduces the home project: "Real-world Experience: A Mini-Interview".

- Task requirements:

1. Find an older person (an older sibling, a cousin, a parent, or a university student). Interview them about their very first part-time job.

2. Use the following 3 guiding questions for the interview:

+ What was your first part-time job and what were your main responsibilities?

+ What essential skills (e.g., communication, teamwork, time management) did you gain from this job?

+ How did this experience help you in your later life or current career?

3. Students use their smartphones to record the audio of their mini-interview. They integrate an AI transcription tool (e.g., Otter.ai or built-in voice-to-text) to transcribe the interview and write a short summary report in English (about 100-150 words). Finally, they format their summary report and organize the audio, transcript, and report into a structured cloud folder (Google Drive/OneDrive).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks 

- Students conduct the interview, take notes of the key details, and write the report.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion 

- In the next lesson, groups share their digital reports and select the most inspiring story to present briefly to the class.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher actively listens to the presentations, provides positive feedback on their vocabulary usage, and corrects any major pronunciation or grammatical errors.
