UNIT 4: MUSIC AND ARTS

COMMUNICATION

 

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Use everyday English phrases to express preferences accurately (using prefer ... and like ... better).
  • Recall and acquire general knowledge about famous people and common forms of art/music in Viet Nam and globally.
  • Read for specific information about how music and arts are taught in schools in other countries and compare them with their own school.

2. Competences

General competences: 

  • Self-control and independent learning, communication and collaboration, problem-solving.

Specific competences: 

  • Accurately pronounce and use preference structures in everyday conversation; apply scanning skills to find specific information in texts.

Digital competences:

  • [2.1.TC1a]: Choose simple digital technologies for interaction.
  • [2.4.TC1a]: Select clearly identified and regularly used digital tools and technologies for collaborative processes.

EVERYDAY ENGLISH - EXPRESSING PREFERENCES

Activity 1: Listen and read the dialogue, paying attention to the highlighted parts. 

a. Objective: To introduce two ways of expressing preferences.

b. Content: Students listen to and read the dialogue between Nick and Nam.

c. Product: Students understand how to use prefer sth and like sth better.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher opens the digital textbook (hoclieu.vn) and projects the dialogue between Nick and Nam.

- Teacher instructs students to listen to the audio and use their digital highlighting tool to mark the structures used to express preferences.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students listen and track the text on their tablets, highlighting the target structures.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher asks: What phrase does Nam use to choose folk music? What phrase does he use to choose modern art?

- Elicit the structures: prefer + N and like + N + better.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher writes the structures on the board. Has students practice the dialogue in pairs.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Highlighted phrases: prefer folk music, like modern art better.

MUSIC AND ARTS IN SCHOOL

Activity 3: QUIZ - What do you know? Work in groups and choose the correct answer to each question.

a. Objective: To help Ss recall/get to know information about famous people and common forms of arts.

b. Content: Students work in groups to choose the correct answers to 4 cultural questions.

c. Product: Correct answers about Vietnamese and global arts.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher divides the class into groups of 4.

- Teacher instructs groups to read the 4 questions in the textbook. If they don't know the answer, they are allowed to use a secure AI chatbot (like Gemini) or a search engine (e.g., Safari, Google,...) on one tablet per group to find the facts.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Groups discuss. If stuck on Q3 (Bac Ninh) or Q2 (Water puppetry), they type a prompt into the AI: "Where did water puppetry originate in Vietnam?"

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on groups to provide answers.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the answers and provides additional interesting facts.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

c. Product: Correctly identified vocabulary words related to the topic.

Activity 5: Work in groups. Talk about how you learn music and arts. 

a. Objective: To help Ss talk about their own school and compare it with Susie's school.

b. Content: Discuss and compare using like, as ... as, or different from.

c. Product: Meaningful sentences comparing the two educational settings.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher creates a 2-column digital brainstorming board (e.g., Jamboard/Miro): "Our School" vs "Susie's School".

- Groups must discuss and type at least 3 sticky notes comparing the two schools onto the board using the target phrases.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students discuss in groups, formulate sentences, and upload their sticky notes.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- One student from each group presents their ideas using the digital board as a visual aid.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher provides feedback on fluency and grammar (especially the comparative structures).

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Sticky notes containing sentences like:

- "Our school is different from Susie's school because drama is not taught here."

- "Learning music in our school is as fun as in Susie's school."

a. Objective: To deeply consolidate the vocabulary, grammar (expressing preferences), and cultural knowledge from the lesson through a comprehensive, multi-level digital mission.

b. Content: Students complete Worksheet containing Task 1 (Multiple Choice) and Task 2 (Word Formation and Sentence Transformation).

c. Products: Accurate application of vocabulary, word forms, and syntactic transformations on the digital worksheet.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To encourage students to apply their knowledge of arts, express preferences, and utilize technology creatively in a real-world context.

c. Product: A digital poster or a short vlog (video) introducing a personal preference in arts/music, comparing it to another form, and sharing a fun fact.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher explains the homework project: "You are a Junior Arts Ambassador!"

- Task: Create a digital poster (using Canva) OR a 1-minute video vlog (using CapCut or smartphone camera).

- Requirements:

1. State which art or music form you prefer and which you like better (e.g., "I prefer pop to classical", "I like painting better than dancing").

2. Use the comparative structures (as...as, different from) to compare your favorite art form to another.

3. Include one interesting fact about a famous composer, singer, or traditional art form.

- Teacher explicitly instructs students to use an AI chatbot (like ChatGPT or Gemini) to help them research the "fun fact" for requirement #3 safely.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- At home, students draft their scripts, use AI for research, and design their posters/record their videos.

- They upload their final products to the class Padlet link provided by the teacher.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- In the next lesson, the teacher will host a "Digital Gallery Walk" where students view each other's work on the smartboard and leave positive comments.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher grades based on creativity, accurate use of preference/comparative structures, and digital effort.
