UNIT 1: HOBBIES

GETTING STARTED

 

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Set the context for the introductory conversation about hobbies.
  • Introduce the topic of the unit, the vocabulary related to hobbies, the sounds /ə/ and /ɜ:/, and the present simple tense.

2. Competences

General competences:

  • Self-control and independent learning: listen and share personal opinions with partners and teacher.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks.

Specific competences:

  • Read and listen for specific information about favourite hobbies.
  • Identify and use vocabulary related to hobbies (doing things, making things, collecting things).
  • Categorise hobbies into suitable groups.

Digital competences:

  • 1.1.TC1c: Access and navigate through digital learning materials.
  • 2.1.TC1a: Perform regular interactions using digital platforms.
  • 2.4.TC1a: Select and use digital tools for collaborative group work.

II. RESOURCES AND MATERIALS

1. Teacher's aids

  • Textbook Global Success 7, Teacher's Book, Lesson Plan.
  • Computer, projector/smart TV, audio speakers.
  • Flashcards or pictures of hobbies.
  • Digital platforms/tools: hoclieu.vn., Mentimeter/Quizizz, Google Sheets, Padlet.
  • AI Image Generator tool (e.g., Canva Magic Media, Bing Image Creator).

2. Students' aids

  • Textbook, notebooks, pens, colored pencils.
  • Smartphones or tablets with internet access (if allowed) or computer lab access.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge and create a friendly, engaging atmosphere before starting the new lesson.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a quick game "Brainstorming" about free time activities.

c. Product: Students' correct vocabulary related to hobbies and free time activities.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher divides the class into 2 teams.

- Teacher provides a link or QR code to an interactive digital word cloud tool (e.g., Mentimeter).

- Teacher asks students to enter as many free time activities as possible in 2 minutes on the board.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students use their tablets/smartphones to input as many free time activities as possible. 

- Teacher observes and guides students who need technical assistance (if necessary).

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher shows the live word cloud on the smartboard: 

Expected vocabulary on the board: reading books, playing football, watching TV, swimming, etc.

- Students discuss the most prominent words. Other students can offer alternative opinions (if any).

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher checks spelling, declares the winning team, and leads into the new lesson: "Today we will learn about Unit 1: Hobbies and explore different types of hobbies".

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Listen and read

a. Objective: To set the context for the introductory conversation and introduce the topic of hobbies.

b. Content: Students look at the picture, listen to the recording, and read the conversation along.

c. Product: Students understand the context and can read the conversation aloud with correct pronunciation.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks Ss to look at the digital textbook on hoclieu.vn via the smart TV.

- Teacher asks: "Can you guess who they are? What can you see in the pictures? What hobby do they have?"

- Teacher introduces the two characters: Trang and Ann. Explain they are friends.

- Teacher plays the recording twice for Ss to listen and read along.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students view the screen and answer the teacher's questions.

- Students listen to the audio and read the conversation silently, underlining words related to Hobbies.

- The teacher observes, guides, and supports the students (if necessary).

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher invites some pairs of Ss to read the conversation aloud.

- Teacher confirms the correct answers to the initial questions.

- Teacher asks Ss to say the words in the text related to Hobbies.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher writes the words on the board, corrects students' pronunciation if needed.

Activity 2: Read the conversation again and write T (True) or F (False).

a. Objective: To help Ss understand the conversation details.

b. Content: Students read 5 statements and decide whether they are True (T) or False (F).

c. Product: Students' correct True/False answers.

- Teacher explains the strategies of doing T/F exercise (underline key words, locate information).

- Students read the statements carefully, refer back to the text to confirm, and write T or F.

- The teacher observes, guides, and supports the students (if necessary).

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher allows students to share their answers with a partner.

c. Product: Students' completed survey tables, mini-posters (drawings) and short writing/presentation.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks students to take out a piece of paper and colored pencils.

- Task 1: Ask your classmates which hobbies they like using 'Do you like...?'. Write their names in the table.

- Task 2: Open an AI Image Generator (e.g., Canva Magic Media or Bing Image Creator). Type a descriptive prompt in English to generate a picture of your favourite hobby.

- Write 3 sentences describing the hobby using the present simple tense, and post both the image and the text to the class Padlet.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students stand up, ask around, and complete the table in 3-5 minutes. The student who completes first wins.

- Students input prompts into the Gen AI tool, select the best generated image, and write their sentences.

- Students upload their final work to the shared Padlet.

- The teacher observes, guides, and supports the students (if necessary).

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- The winner of the game reads aloud the names they have.

- Teacher asks students to work in pairs and present their 'Favourite Hobby' to their partner.

- Teacher invites 2-3 volunteer students to present in front of the class.
