UNIT 4: MUSIC AND ARTS

GETTING STARTED

 

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Set the context for the introductory conversation between Trang and Nick.
  • Get familiar with the topic "Music and Arts".
  • Identify and use basic vocabulary related to the topic (art gallery, paintbrush, water puppet show, musical instruments, etc.).
  • Skim and scan for specific information in a conversation.

2. Competences

General competences:

  • Self-control and independent learning: Actively participate in listening, reading, and doing tasks.
  • Communication and collaboration: Work effectively in pairs or groups to discuss hobbies and complete the quiz.

Specific competences:

  • Develop reading and listening skills for general ideas and specific details.

1. WARM-UP & INTRODUCTION

a. Objective: To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson; to lead into the new unit and activate students' background knowledge about music and arts.

b. Content: Teacher plays short audio clips of different music genres, asks students to guess, and leads into the topic using interactive questioning.

c. Product: Students successfully identify music genres and share their personal habits regarding music and drawing.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher uses an AI music generator (e.g., Google's Lyria 3.5 ,...) to play 3 short, distinct audio clips (e.g., folk music, pop music, rock).

- Teacher asks students to listen and guess the genre of each clip.

- Teacher asks students to open their books to page 40, draws attention to the THIS UNIT INCLUDES box, and introduces the unit.

- Teacher provides a QR code to a live Mentimeter poll with the questions:

1. Do you often listen to music? When? How often?

2. What kind of music do you like? Why?

3. Do you paint or draw in your spare time?

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students listen carefully and shout out the music genres.

- Students scan the QR code and type their short answers to the personal questions on their digital devices.

c. Product: Students understand the general context of the conversation and practice reading it aloud.

a. Objective: To help Ss understand the main idea of the text.

b. Content: Students choose the correct main idea from three options.
