LESSON 6: WRITING

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Understand the structure and language of a short message.
• Practice sentence structures frequently used in invitations, suggestions, and other short messages.
• Write a short message (35-45 words) in response to an invitation.

2. Competences

General competences: 

• Self-control and independent learning.
• Communication and collaboration (working in pairs or groups to complete the writing tasks).

Specific competences: 

• Read for specific information.
• Apply appropriate structures and vocabulary to write a short communicative text.

• Collaborative platforms (e.g., Padlet, Jamboard) and access to Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Grammarly).

• Textbook, notebooks, pens, draft paper.
• Smartphones/tablets/laptops with internet connection.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge about invitations/suggestions and create an engaging atmosphere before the writing lesson.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a quick activity "Unscramble the Sentence".

c. Product: Students' correct sentences about suggestions/invitations.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher divides the class into 2 or 4 teams.

- Teacher shows jumbled words using an interactive digital polling tool (e.g., Mentimeter, Quizizz): we / don't / Why / healthy / cook / together / food / ?

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Teams work quickly to rearrange the words and use their digital devices to submit the correct sentence to the interactive platform.

- The teacher observes and encourages students.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teams view the real-time results on the smart TV.

- Expected sentence: Why don't we cook healthy food together?

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher gives points to the fastest teams via the digital leaderboard.

- Teacher leads into the new lesson: This is a sentence used to make a suggestion. Today, we will learn how to write a short message to make suggestions, invite someone, or respond to an invitation.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Read the parts of the short message and put them in the correct order. 

a. Objective: To familiarise Ss with the structure and language of a short message.

b. Content: Ss read 6 parts of a message (A-F) and reorder them. Ss read the Tips box about the structure.

c. Product: Correct sequence of the short message.

Activity 2: Write a sentence to express each message below. Begin with the words given. 

a. Objective: To help Ss practise sentence structures frequently used in invitations, suggestions, and other short messages.

b. Content: Ss write sentences using the given prompts (Why don't you..., You should..., Don't forget..., etc.). 

c. Product: Completed and grammatically correct sentences.

d. Organization:

Activity 3: Write a short message (35-45 words) to reply to the one in 1. 

a. Objective: To help Ss practise writing a complete short message in response to an invitation.

b. Content: Students write a short message (35-45 words) to reply to Mai's message in Activity 1, following the guidelines in the textbook.

c. Product: Students' written drafts/messages.

3. PRACTICE

Mission 1: Error Identification and Correction

a. Objective: To consolidate sentence structures frequently used in invitations and suggestions before students write their own messages.

b. Content: Students find and correct ONE basic grammar mistake in each given sentence.

c. Product: Students' correct worksheet answers.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher distributes WORKSHEET 1.

- Teacher sets a time limit of 4 minutes.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students work individually to find and correct the mistakes.
