UNIT 3: CITIES OF THE FUTURE

LESSON 8: LOOKING BACK AND PROJECT

 

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 

  • Revise linking between a final consonant and an initial vowel.
  • Revise words and phrases related to cities of the future.
  • Revise stative verbs in the continuous form and linking verbs.
  • Develop research and collaboration skills, and practice giving a poster presentation about the ideal city of the future.

2. Competences

General competences: 

  • Self-control and independent learning: evaluate their own learning through self-assessment.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in groups to present posters and assess peers' performances.

Specific competences: 

  • Pronounce sentences with correct consonant-to-vowel linking.
  • Apply vocabulary and grammar accurately in speaking and writing.

II. RESOURCES AND MATERIALS

1. Teacher's aids 

  • Textbook Global Success 11, Teacher's Book, Lesson Plan.
  • Computer, projector/smart TV, audio speakers.
  • Interactive platforms (Mentimeter/Padlet), AI platforms (ChatGPT/Canva AI).
  • Digital peer assessment and self-assessment checklists (Google Forms/Azota).

2. Students' aids 

  • Textbook, notebooks, pens.
  • Smartphones/Tablets/Laptops with internet connection.
  • Group project digital posters (prepared in advance). 

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP 

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge and create an engaging atmosphere before revising the unit.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a quick game "Word Web" about future cities.

c. Product: Students' correct vocabulary related to the topic of the unit.

d. Organization: 

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

Teacher divides the class into 2 teams.

- Teacher shares a QR code/link to an interactive platform (e.g., Mentimeter, Google Forms,...) with the central topic "FUTURE CITIES".

- Teacher asks students to use their devices to submit as many adjectives/nouns as possible in 2 minutes.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students use their smartphones to quickly type and submit words to the digital word cloud.

- If teams get stuck, they are allowed to ask an AI chatbot a quick prompt (e.g., "Give me 3 adjectives for a smart city") to get ideas.

- The teacher observes and cheers the students on. 

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher projects the live digital word cloud on the smart TV.

- Expected vocabulary: smart, sustainable, liveable, green, underground, modern, etc. 

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher counts the correct words, declares the winning team, and leads into the lesson: You have remembered a lot of words from Unit 3. Today, we will look back at what we have learnt and present your ideal city projects.

[6.2.NC1a]: Students use smartphones to interact with AI chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT) to generate and adjust prompts for brainstorming advanced vocabulary related to future cities.

[2.4.NC1a]: Students propose and use interactive digital tools (e.g., Mentimeter) to co-create a collaborative word cloud in real-time.

2. PRESENTATION 

PRONUNCIATION – Listen and mark (‿) the consonant and vowel sounds that are linked. Then practise saying the sentences.

a. Objective: To help Ss revise linking between a final consonant and an initial vowel.

b. Content: Students listen to the recording, mark the linked sounds, and practice saying the sentences.

c. Product: Correct marks of linking sounds and accurate pronunciation.

VOCABULARY – Complete the sentences. Use the words and phrases you have learnt in this unit.

a. Objective: To help Ss revise words and phrases they have learnt in the unit.

b. Content: Students complete sentences using the first given letters.

c. Product: Students' correct completion of the vocabulary words.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks Ss to complete the sentences with suitable words or phrases. Tells them that the first letters are given as prompts.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Have Ss do this activity individually on an interactive worksheet (hoclieu.vn) then compare their answers with their partners.

- Ss use online digital dictionaries (Oxford/Cambridge) on their tablets/laptops to verify collocations and context if unsure.

- Teacher observes and supports if necessary.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher checks answers by asking individual Ss to type the missing words/phrases on the smart board.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the correct answers and explains the meanings if Ss are confused.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

3. PRACTICE 

a. Objective: To consolidate the core vocabulary and grammar learned in the unit through basic, straightforward written exercises.

d. Organization: 

Mission 1: Complete Task 1 and Task 2. 

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher distributes the practice worksheet containing 2 tasks.

Task 1: Fill in the blanks with the correct words from the box.

- Teacher sets a time limit of 8 minutes for both tasks.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students work individually to complete the tasks.

- The teacher observes, ensuring the activity remains focused and manageable for students. 

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher invites some students to share their answers with the class:

- Other students can comment or check their own answers.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Pupils receives the link and choose the answer.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher gives pupils 5 minutes to choose the correct answer.
