LESSON 5: LISTENING

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Listen for general ideas (gist) and specific information about a school tour programme.
• Brainstorm and discuss suitable activities for a cultural exchange event.

2. Competences

General competences:

• Self-control and independent learning: listen actively and take notes to capture specific information.
• Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to discuss ideas and complete learning tasks.

• Develop listening comprehension skills through predicting and verifying information.
• Use appropriate language to propose and discuss activities for welcoming foreign students.

• Computer, projector/smart TV, audio speakers.
• Interactive quiz platforms (Quizizz/Kahoot!) and digital polling tools (Mentimeter).

2. Students' aids

• Textbook, notebooks, pens.
• Smartphones/Tablets/Laptops with internet access.
• AI Chatbots (ChatGPT/Gemini), collaborative platforms (Padlet/Google Docs), and design apps (Canva).

III. PROCEDURES 

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge, create an engaging atmosphere, and smoothly lead into the topic of cultural exchange and the ASEAN School Tour Programme.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a short discussion activity called "The Welcome Committee". 

c. Product: Students' initial ideas on how to welcome foreign visitors to their school.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher shows images of a Korean flag, an Indonesian flag, and a Vietnamese flag on the screen.

- Teacher asks the class to imagine: Next week, a group of high school students from Korea and Indonesia will visit our school. As the host students, what is ONE thing you would do to make them feel welcome?

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students think individually for 1 minute.

- Students use AI Chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT or Gemini) on their smartphones to quickly research and brainstorm culturally appropriate welcoming ideas.

- The teacher observes, guides, and encourages students to think about food, greetings, or school tours. 

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on 3-5 students to share their ideas with the whole class (e.g., say hello in their language, give them a traditional Vietnamese snack, show them the library).

- Other students can comment or add to the ideas. 

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher acknowledges the good ideas and leads into the new lesson: These are excellent ideas for a cultural exchange. Today, we are going to listen to Lan and Phong talking about a real programme where students visit different countries. Let's start Lesson 5: Listening - ASEAN School Tour Programme.

ASEAN SCHOOL TOUR PROGRAMME

Activity 1. Work in groups. Look back at the first news item in the reading text on page 45. Discuss the following questions: Would you like to participate in the ASEAN School Tour Programme? Why/Why not?

a. Objective: To introduce the topic of the listening and get Ss involved in the lesson.

b. Content: Students discuss whether they would like to participate in the ASEAN School Tour Programme and give reasons.

c. Product: Students' spoken answers expressing their preferences and reasons.

Activity 2. Listen to a conversation between two students. What are they talking about?  

a. Objective: To help Ss practise listening for gist.

b. Content: Students look at three topics, predict the answer, and listen to check.

c. Product: Students choose the correct topic for the conversation.

Activity 3. Listen to the conversation again and choose the correct answer A, B or C. 

a. Objective: To help Ss practise listening for specific information.

b. Content: Students read multiple-choice questions, listen to the conversation again, and choose the correct answers. Includes an extension role-play for stronger classes.

c. Product: Students' correct multiple-choice answers and role-play performances.

Activity 4. Work in groups. Discuss the following questions: Can you think of any suitable activities for the event ar Lan and Phong”s school? How will they benefit the participants? 

a. Objective: To give Ss an opportunity to use the ideas and language in the listening in a speaking task.

b. Content: Students work in groups to discuss and brainstorm suitable activities for the cultural exchange event.

c. Product: Students' list of suggested activities for the event.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate vocabulary related to the topic of cultural exchange and revise basic grammar structures suitable for 11th-grade students.

b. Content: Students complete one practice mission consisting of two tasks (Word Formation and Error Correction) focused on general language use related to the unit's theme, independent of the listening track.

c. Products: Students' correct written answers for the two tasks.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To give students an opportunity to creatively apply the topic of welcoming foreign students in a real-life, project-based context at home.

b. Content: Students design a "Cultural Ambassador Package" as a homework assignment.

c. Product: A short written proposal, a digital presentation (Canva/PowerPoint), or a mini-poster outlining one specific cultural exchange activity and an introductory message.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher assigns the Home Mission: Imagine you are chosen as the main 'Cultural Ambassador' for your school to welcome the ASEAN students. Your mission is to create a 'Cultural Ambassador Package' at home. The package must include:

1. A welcoming message (about 3-4 sentences) introducing yourself and expressing your excitement.

2. ONE detailed activity you want to organize for them (e.g., a traditional food tasting, a folk game competition, or a school tour). Explain how it works and why you think they will like it.

- Teacher requires students to use digital design tools (e.g., Canva, PowerPoint,...) to format their package and upload it to the class's online board (like Padlet or Zalo).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students take notes on the requirements. At home, they use design applications to create their presentation/poster. 

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher asks 1-2 students to quickly share what activity they might choose to ensure they understand the prompt.

- Example student response: I will design a poster for a 'Banh Mi Tasting' event because food is the best way to make friends.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the students understand the task clearly.

- Teacher summarizes the main points of the lesson.
