LESSON 3: READING

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Activate prior knowledge about the topic of the reading (ASEAN news).
Practise reading for main ideas by matching suitable headlines to news items.
Practise guessing the meaning of words from context.
Practise reading for specific information.
Use the ideas and language in the reading to talk about their opinions and give reasons.

2. Competences

General competences:

Self-control and independent learning: read independently to locate specific information and infer meanings.
Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to discuss headlines, answer questions, and share opinions.

Specific competences:

Skimming for general comprehension and scanning for specific details (numbers, dates, topics).
Vocabulary deduction skills.

Digital competences:

II. RESOURCES AND MATERIALS

Textbook Global Success 11, Teacher's Book, Lesson Plan.
Computer, projector/smart TV.
Generative AI Chatbot (ChatGPT/Gemini) and interactive polling platform (Mentimeter/Kahoot!).
A physical English newspaper and an online news webpage.

2. Students' aids

Textbook, notebooks, pens.
Smartphones, tablets, or laptops with internet access.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge, introduce the concept of news sections, and create an engaging atmosphere before the main reading text.

b. Content: Teacher organizes an activity called "Guess the News Section".

c. Product: Students successfully match news headlines to the correct news sections.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher uses an interactive polling tool (e.g., Mentimeter) to show 4 short headlines on the screen:

1. Vietnam wins Gold in SEA Games final.

2. New curriculum changes for high schools announced.

3. Prime Minister attends the ASEAN Summit.

4. Traditional Music Festival opens in Hanoi.

- Teacher asks students to match each headline with one of these sections: Politics, Education, Sports, or Culture.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it.

- Students use their personal devices to access the link/QR code and submit their matches within 2 minutes.

- The teacher observes and encourages students to think about where they usually see such headlines.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on random students to share their answers.

- Other students can comment or offer alternative opinions.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher provides the correct answers (1-Sports, 2-Education, 3-Politics, 4-Culture).

- Teacher leads into the new lesson: Today we will read different news items about ASEAN and Vietnam. Let's find out what sections they belong to in our reading lesson.

a. Objective: To activate prior knowledge about the topic of the reading and get Ss involved in the lesson.

b. Content: Students discuss two questions about reading the news and their favourite news sections.

c. Product: Students share their personal habits and preferences regarding reading the news.

Activity 2: Read the news items and choose the most suitable headlines for each one. There is ONE extra headline.

a. Objective: To help Ss practise reading for main ideas.

b. Content: Students read three news items and match them with the correct headlines (A, B, C, D). There is ONE extra headline.

c. Product: Students correctly match the headlines to the news items.

- Teacher asks Ss to read the three news items once to get an overall idea.

- Teacher asks Ss to work in groups to discuss the best headline for each item.

- Students read individually, then discuss in groups to compare answers.

- The teacher observes and provides support if necessary.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher checks answers by calling on group representatives.

- In stronger classes, Teacher asks Ss to explain why the titles are suitable, focusing on the keywords in the options.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the correct answers.

- Extension for stronger classes: Put Ss in groups and give a time limit to summarise each news item in one sentence.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

1. D (Option D is the only heading that mentions Korean students).

2. A (Option A mentions an event in the future and news item 2 sounds like a call for participation).

3. C (Option C is the only heading that talks about sport for women).

(Option B is too broad and not mentioned in the texts).

Activity 3: Read the news items again and match the highlighted words with their meanings.

a. Objective: To help Ss practise guessing the meaning of words from context.

b. Content: Students match four highlighted words from the texts (relations, eye-opening, represent, live-streamed) with their definitions (a-d).

c. Product: Correct matching of vocabulary and definitions.

Activity 4: Read the news items again and answer each questions below with no more than FOUR words and/or a number.

a. Objective: To help Ss practise reading for specific information.

b. Content: Students read 5 questions, scan the texts, and answer with strict word limits.

c. Product: Students' correct short answers.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks Ss to read the questions and underline the keywords in each of them.

- Teacher checks whether Ss have got the right keywords (e.g., 1. How many, students, visited, AKC).

- Teacher reminds Ss that the answers should be no more than FOUR words and/or a number.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students read through news items to locate the answers, paying attention only to the parts containing the answers.

- Students work in pairs or groups to compare answers.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher checks answers as a class by asking individual Ss to write them on the board.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher evaluates the answers based on accuracy and the word count limit.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

c. Product: Students' spoken reflections and formulated questions based on the 5Ws framework.

- Teacher instructs students to use voice-activated AI search engines (like Siri, Google Assistant, or Alexa on their phones/IoT devices) to ask their formulated questions and find more real-world information about the programs mentioned.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students choose one news item, formulate their questions, and speak to their smartphone's voice assistant (e.g., "Hey Google, how are students selected for the ASEAN School Tour Programme?").

- Students note down the answers provided by the AI.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher invites several students to share their opinions and questions with the whole class.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher provides feedback on students' fluency, ideas, and grammar.

Suggested answer:

I want to find more information about news item 1 which is about ASEAN School Tour Programme. I really want to join this programme. So I want to know, for example, how many Korean and how many Asian students can take part, when the programme starts, how the students are selected, whether they have to speak English, how often this event happens, how many days they stay in Korea.

[6.1.NC1a]: Analyze how AI works in specific applications by interacting with voice-activated AI search engines on mobile devices to retrieve specific real-world information about ASEAN programs.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the vocabulary and reading comprehension skills learned in the reading passage.

b. Content: Students complete one mission consisting of two exercise-based tasks (Gap-filling and Summary Completion).

c. Products: Students' correct answers for the two tasks in the worksheet.
