UNIT 3: CITIES OF THE FUTURE

LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED

 

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Get an overview of the unit topic "Cities of the future".
  • Identify and use some vocabulary related to cities, technology, and architecture (e.g., smart city, green city, public transport, infrastructure).
  • Identify and understand the use of stative verbs in continuous form and linking verbs. 

2. Competences 

General competences:

  • Self-control and independent learning: listen and share personal opinions with partners and teacher.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks. 

Specific competences:

  • Read and listen for specific information about future cities. 

Digital competences:

Activity 1: Listen and read 

a. Objective: To introduce some vocabulary and grammar points to be learnt in the unit.

b. Content: Students brainstorm, look at the picture, listen to the recording, and read the conversation along.

c. Product: Students understand the context, underline related words, and read the conversation aloud.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher puts Ss into groups. Draws a mind map Cities of the future on the board and has groups brainstorm aspects of the topic.

- T provides a link to digital conversation text (hoclieu.vn).

- Teacher asks Ss to look at the picture (page 28) and elicit the context (Who are they? What are they talking about?).

- Teacher plays the recording (Track 16) twice and asks Ss to use the digital highlight tool to underline words/phrases related to cities, technology, and architecture simultaneously.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students brainstorm ideas.

- Ss access the link via their devices, listen to the audio, and highlight words digitally.

- The teacher observes, guides, and supports.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Groups call out brainstormed ideas to fill the mind map.

- Ss pair up to compare underlined words.

- Teacher calls on 3 Ss to read the conversation aloud (Ms Smith, Nam, Mai).

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher checks comprehension, confirms correct ideas, and corrects pronunciation.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Mind map ideas: types of future cities, where they will be built, how they will look like...

- Answers to picture context:

+ A woman is showing models of cities to students.

+ They are Ms Smith, Nam, Mai. They are talking about cities of the future.

- Underlined words: green city, green areas, public transport, smart city, AI technologies, modern infrastructure, high-rise buildings, etc.

Activity 2: Read the conversation again and complete the notes. Use no more than TWO words for each blank.

a. Objective: To check Ss' comprehension of the conversation.

b. Content: Students complete the notes using no more than TWO words for each blank.

c. Product: Completed notes about Green city and Smart city.

Activity 3: Match the words to make phrases mentioned in 1. 

a. Objective: To introduce collocations to describe cities (adjective + noun).

b. Content: Students match the adjectives (1-5) with the nouns (a-e).

c. Product: Correct collocations.

d. Organization:

- Teacher checks Ss' understanding of individual words.

- Asks Ss to read the conversation quickly again, find the phrases, and do the matching.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher writes individual words on the board and has Ss come to match them.

- Alternatively, one student reads the adjective, another says the noun.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher checks the answers and explains meanings if necessary.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Activity 4: Complete the sentences with phrases from 1.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the vocabulary and grammar learned in the lesson through basic exercises.

Mission 1: Complete 2 practice tasks.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher distributes the handout containing Task 1 and Task 2.

Task 1: Fill in each blank with ONE suitable phrase from the box.

- Other students can comment or offer alternative opinions (if any). 

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher gives feedback, corrects mistakes, and praises students for grasping the basic concepts well.

Mission 2: Complete the quiz (optional).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Pupils receives the link and choose the answer.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion
