STARTER

(3 periods)

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to: 

  • Sing the song Back to school with correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody;
  • Review the vocabulary and structure items related to months of the year and someone’s birthday;
  • Complete three gapped sentences in My goal tree about their learning goals and share them with their friends.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective:

- To create a friendly and lively atmosphere in the classroom.

- To greet and chat together.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher Greet the class “Hello. / Hi. I’m ____. How are you?” and encourage pupils to respond and introduce themselves.

- Teacher guides pupils play a game: Pass the ball. 

+ Give a ball to a student and turn on the music. 

+ Have that student pass the ball until the music stops. 

+ The one who is keeping the ball will follow the teacher’s instructions. 

e.g.  Hello!/  Hi! My name’s (Trang)./ How are you? I’m fine, thanks. And you? I’m good. 

- Teacher used a computer connected to the internet to open the website hoclieu.vn on a large TV screen, clicked on the correct resource, the online English 5 textbook, to introduce an overview of the lesson plan to the whole class.

- Teacher tell pupils what they will learn in this lesson.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Let’s sing

a. Objective: To sing the song Back to school with correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the title and lyrics of the song. Encourage them to point at the pictures to say what they see. 

- Teacher has pupils read and listen to the song, draw their attention to the pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

- Teacher plays the recording again and let them listen to and practise singing the song, line by line, while doing actions or clapping their hands when they hear the keywords such as school, happy, friends, learning, playing and cool in the first verse and school, happy, teachers, learning, playing and cool in the second verse. 

- Teacher asks pupils to listen to and sing the whole song while doing actions or clapping their hands. Go around the classroom and offer help where necessary. 

- Teacher invites a few groups to the front of the class to sing the song. The class may sing along to reinforce the activity.

Activity 2. Let’s play

a. Objective: To review the vocabulary and structure items related to months of the year and someone’s birthday.

b. Organisation

- Teacher invites two teams of six pupils to play. Tell pupils how to play the game: Pupils say their birthday months and line up in order, starting with January.

- Teacher sets up an interactive Padlet (or Google Jamboard) containing 12 publicly displayed monthly header boxes on the screen. The teacher assigns coordination tasks and grants access so that team representatives can drag and drop their name tags into the online birth month column.

- The faster team will win the game. 

Activity 3. Write and share

a. Objective:

- To complete three gapped sentences in My goal tree about their learning goals and share them with their friends.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher tells the class the goal of the activity and explain that they should write three sentences about their learning goals. Check comprehension.

- Teacher opens the AI ​​chatbot system (Gemini or ChatGPT) on the main screen and instruct the students on how to give commands in English: "Give me 5 simple English learning goals for primary students" to spark ideas.

- Teacher gets pupils to work in pairs to share their learning goals. 

Extension: Invite one or two pupils to read their learning goals aloud.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To review the vocabularies relating to the months of the year.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher prepares word cards about months of the year.

- Teacher gives each pupil a bingo grid with four squares. 

- Teacher asks pupils to choose four words and write in a bingo grid.

- Teacher explains that when you call out a word, pupils should search for that word on their bingo card. If they have the word, they should cross it out. The first pupil to cross out all their words wins. 

- Teacher praises the winner.

* CONSOLIDATION

- The teacher reviews and summarizes the main points of the lesson based on what the pupils have learned.

- The teacher comments on and evaluates pupils' participation in the lesson, praising active pupils and reminding and encouraging those who are less active or shy.

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To revise classroom instructions.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher organise to play game: Yes or No.

- Teacher asks pupils to play the game individually. 

- Teacher gives each pupil two boards, Yes and No. 

- Teacher shows a question and pictures on the board. Pupils read the question and look at the pictures. Then raise the correct board, Yes or No and shout the correct answer as fast as they can. If the answer is No, they have to add more words to tell the correct idea. 

Example: Was the weather hot yesterday? 

+ raising the No board.

+ saying “No, it wasn’t. It was rainy.”

- Teacher gives scores to the fastest pupil with the correct answer.

* Some suggestions for questions:

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Let’s chant

a. Objective: To say the chant with the correct pronunciation, word stress and rhythm.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at the picture and state activity the characters are doing.

- Teacher plays the recording of the first verse for pupils to listen. Play it again, line by line, for pupils to listen and repeat. Draw their attention to the rhythm, word stress and pronunciation. Encourage them to clap or do actions while chanting. 

- Teacher repeats Steps 2 and 3 for the second verse of the chant. 

- Teacher plays the recording all the way through for pupils to chant and clap their hands..

Activity 2. Listen and tick

a. Objective: To listen to and understand two instructions and choose the correct pictures.

b. Organisation

- Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the pictures and ask questions such as “What are they doing? or What activity are they doing?” to elicit the activities in the pictures. Remind them to look at pictures a and b and contrast them.

- Teacher gets pupils to swap books with a partner and check their answers before checking as a class. Correct the answers, if necessary.
