UNIT 2: OUR HOMES

Lesson 2 (2 periods)

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone's home and address.
  • Correctly say the words and use "What's your address? - It's ___." to ask and answer questions about someone's address.
  • Use "Do you live in ___? - Yes, I do. / No, I don't." and "What's your address? - It's ___." in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand two communicative contexts in which speakers ask and answer questions about their addresses, and circle the correct pictures.
  • Complete two gapped dialogues with the help of picture cues.
  • Listen to and complete the song “Homes” and sing it with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone's home and address.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher asks pupils to look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters (Minh and Lucy) and say what they are talking about.

- Teacher plays the recording for Picture a. Have pupils listen and follow the language. Play again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat individually and in chorus.

- Teacher corrects pronunciation where necessary. Repeat the procedure with Picture b.

- Teacher navigates the E-book software to locate and play the correct audio track.

 

- Teacher invites a few pairs to the front of the classroom to listen and repeat the questions and answers of exchanges a and b.

Extension: Teacher draws pupils' attention to the question "What's your address?" and the answer "It's 45 Ba Trieu Street." Explain how to use capital letters in addresses in English, and how to read numbers in addresses.

Activity 3: Let's talk

a. Objective: To use "Do you live in ___? - Yes/No..." and "What's your address? - It's ___." in a freer context.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher asks pupils to look at the pictures and elicit the addresses (101 Tran Hung Dao Street, 23 Le Thanh Tong Street, 95 King Street, 33 Oxford Street).

- Teacher points at the first building and runs an example: asks the class "Do you live in this building?", elicits "No, I don't.". Asks "What's your address?", elicits "It's 101 Tran Hung Dao Street." Writes it on the board.

- Teacher gives pupils time to work in pairs and take turns pointing at each picture to ask and answer.

- Teacher invites a few pairs to come to the front and act out the exchanges.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand two communicative contexts in which speakers ask and answer questions about their addresses, and circle the correct pictures.

Activity 5: Read and complete.

a. Objective: To complete two gapped dialogues with the help of picture cues.

b. Organisation:

- Do the first gapped dialogue with the class as example. Teacher has pupils read the dialogue. Draw pupils’ attention to the address and the distance from the address to the place where the characters are before guessing the missing words. Remind pupils of the collocation 'far from'.

- Teacher reads the second dialogue. Point at the building and draw pupils’ attention to the boy’s hand pointing towards the building on the left-hand side. Elicit the missing word in the first gap (that). For the other missing words, tell pupils to rely on the context of the questions and answers as well as the picture.

- Teacher gives pupils a time limit to read the gapped dialogues, look at the pictures and fill in the gaps independently. Go around the classroom and offer support where necessary.

- Teacher gets pupils to swap books with a partner and check their answers. Invite one pupil to write the answers on the board and check as a class.

Extension: Invite two pairs of pupils to act out the completed dialogues. Check pronunciation.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

 

 

 

- Pupils follow the teacher's example for dialogue 1. Notice the phrase 'far from'.

3. PRACTICE

Mission: Game "The Little Postman"

a. Objective: To consolidate asking and answering about addresses in an engaging and interactive way.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher prepares some small "letters" and gives each pupil a card with an address.

- Teacher explains how to play: Teacher chooses 1 pupil to be the "Postman". The Postman walks around the class, approaches a friend, and asks: "What's your address?". The pupil answers based on their card (e.g., "It's 38 Dien Bien Street.").

- If the pupil answers correctly, the Postman delivers a letter to them. The receiver then becomes the new Postman.

- Teacher monitors, supports weaker pupils, and praises the active ones.
