UNIT 4: OUR FREE-TIME ACTIVITIES

Lesson 1 (2 periods)

 

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about what someone likes doing in their free time. 
  • Correctly say the words and use What do you like doing in your free time? – I like ___. to ask and answer questions about what someone likes doing in their free time.
  • Use What do you like doing in your free time? – I like ___. in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand four communicative contexts about what someone likes doing in their free time, and number the pictures.
  • Complete four gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.
  • Revise target words about free-time activities by playing Who has more correct answers?.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create a fun, engaging atmosphere, review action verbs, and naturally lead into the topic of "free-time activities".

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher organizes a quick game called "Mime and Guess".

- Teacher mimes a few familiar actions without speaking (e.g., reading a book, playing football, watching TV).

- Teacher asks the class: "What am I doing?". Pupils raise their hands to guess.

 

- Teacher praises correct answers and asks: "Do you do this when you have no school? What do you do when you have free time?".

- Teacher introduces the new topic: Unit 4 - Our free-time activities. Ask pupils to open their books.




 

 

 

 

 

- Pupils greet the teacher.

- Pupils listen to the game rules.

- Pupils observe the teacher's actions carefully.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say

a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use What do you like doing in your free time? – I like ___. to ask and answer questions.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at Pictures a, b, c, d and introduces the new phrases: a. play the violin, b. surf the Internet, c. go for a walk, d. water the flowers.

- Teacher demonstrates how to use a basic Voice AI educational tool on the main screen to check the pronunciation of the new phrases.

 

 

 

 

- Teacher has pupils point at Picture a, listen to the recording and repeat the words (play the violin). Then have pupils listen and repeat the full exchange (What do you like doing in your free time? – I like playing the violin.).

- Teacher follows the same procedure with the other three pictures.

- Teacher puts pupils in pairs to practise asking and answering.

- Teacher invites a few pairs to point at the pictures and present to the class.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.






 

 

- Pupils look at the pictures and learn the new vocabulary.

Activity 4: Listen and number

a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts about what someone likes doing in their free time, and number the pictures.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the pictures: a. a boy watching a cartoon, b. a boy going for a walk in the park, c. a girl watering flowers, d. a girl playing the violin. Elicit the activities.

- Teacher pushes a digital version of the numbering task (hoclieu.vn) to the pupils' devices to monitor their real-time progress.

 

- Teacher plays the recording for pupils to do the task by numbering the pictures. Play it again to give another listening opportunity.

- Teacher checks answers together as a class. Have pupils explain the answers by asking questions (e.g., What's she doing?).

- Teacher moves on to the next content.






 

 

- Pupils look at the pictures and state the activities happening in each.

Activity 6: Let's play

a. Objective: To revise target words about free-time activities by playing Who has more correct answers?

b. Organisation:

- Teacher tells pupils they are going to play Who has more correct answers? in groups.

- Teacher sets up a digital collaborative space (e.g., Google Jamboard/ Google Sheet) with different frames for each group, keeping the interface simple and easy to use.

 

- Teacher explains that groups will discuss and make as many sentences as possible to answer the question What do you like doing in your free time? within five minutes.

- Teacher divides the class into groups of five or six.

- Groups write on their paper as many sentences as possible (e.g., In our free time, we like reading books. We like watering the flowers.).

- Teacher invites representatives of the groups to the front to read their sentences aloud. The group that gets the most correct sentences is the winner.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.






 

- Pupils listen to the game rules.

- Pupils in each group use their tablets to type and arrange basic digital sticky notes containing their sentences on their designated digital frame.

- Pupils understand they need to write multiple correct sentences based on the target structure.

- Pupils form groups.

 

- Pupils brainstorm and write down their sentences on paper quickly.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To apply the learned sentence structures to ask about real-life free-time activities of family members.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher assigns a home task called: "My Family's Free Time Survey".

- Teacher gives instructions: 

+ At home, you will become a little reporter. Ask at least 2 family members (father, mother, brother, sister) this question: What do you like doing in your free time?

+ Write their names and their answers on a piece of paper. You can draw small pictures next to their answers to make it beautiful!

- Teacher demonstrates how to use a safe, basic AI image generator (e.g., Canva Magic Media) by inputting a basic prompt (e.g., "a father watering flowers") to show pupils an alternative way to create pictures for their survey if they do not want to draw.

- Teacher invites a few pupils to confirm they understand the task. Inform them they will report their findings in the next lesson.

* CONSOLIDATION

- Teacher reviews and summarizes the main points: Vocabulary about free-time activities (play the violin, surf the Internet, go for a walk, water the flowers) and the structure What do you like doing in your free time? - I like....

- Teacher evaluates pupils' participation and praises active groups.

* ADVICE

- Learn the new vocabulary and sentence patterns by heart.

- Complete the "My Family's Free Time Survey" task at home.

- Prepare for Unit 4 - Lesson 2.
