Lesson 2 (2 periods)

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone's favourite things.
  • Correctly say the words and use "What's your favourite ___? - It's ___." to ask and answer questions about someone's favourite things.
  • Use "Can you tell me about yourself? - ___." and "What's your favourite ___? - It's ___." in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand three communicative contexts in which speakers ask and answer questions about favourite things, and match the characters with the right pictures.
  • Complete two gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.
  • Revise the target vocabulary items and structures by playing the game Find someone who...

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create a fun and engaging atmosphere and lead into the topic of favourite things.

b. Organisation: 

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher prepares a "Mystery Bag" containing 4 items or flashcards (a small ball for sport, a pink item for colour, a toy dolphin for animal, a plastic sandwich for food).

- Teacher can use a Generative AI tool to create a digital "Mystery Bag" on the smartboard, generating partial or blurred images of the items and asking students to guess.

- Teacher invites 4 pupils to come to the front, put their hand in the bag, and pull out one item.

- For each item, teacher asks the pupil: "What is it?" and "Do you like it?".

 

- Teacher leads into the lesson: "Today we will learn how to talk about our favourite things. Let's open our books at page 12, Unit 1, Lesson 2."

 

 

 

 

 

- Pupils greet the teacher.

 

 

 

 

- Pupils interact with the basic AI system on the smartboard by tapping to reveal the full AI-generated image of the mystery item.

- Pupils volunteer to come up and pick an item from the bag.

 

- Pupils identify the item and answer the teacher's questions (e.g., "It's a ball. Yes, I do.").

Activity 2: Listen, point and say

a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use "What's your favourite ___? - It's ___."

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at the pictures (a, b, c, d) and elicit the names of the things.

- Teacher plays the first part of the recording to repeat the words (sport/table tennis, colour/pink, animal/a dolphin, food/a sandwich).

- Teacher points at Picture a, plays the recording for the speech bubbles, and has pupils repeat until confident. Repeat for b, c, and d.

- Teacher has pupils work in pairs to practise asking and answering.

- Teacher invites a few pairs to perform in front of the class.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand three communicative contexts and match characters with the right pictures.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the pictures (Bill, Ben, Linh) and the favourite things (pink, dolphin, table tennis).

- Teacher plays the recording for Exchange 1. Ask pupils to identify the correct picture and draw a line. Play again for Exchange 2 and 3. Go around the classroom to offer support where necessary.

- Teacher opens website hoclieu.vn for pupils to draw matching lines digitally.

- Teacher gets pupils to swap books with a partner and check answers.

a. Objective: To revise vocabulary and structures with the game "Find someone who...".

b. Organisation:

- Teacher explains the rules: Pupils walk around and ask "What's your favourite...?" to find friends who like dolphins, table tennis, pink, or sandwiches.

- Teacher creates a simple digital poll (e.g., Google Forms) and generate a QR code for students to record their findings digitally.

- Teacher sets a time limit. The pupil who finds the most friends wins.
