UNIT 3: MY FOREIGN FRIENDS
Lesson 1 (2 periods)
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge and skills
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about someone’s nationality.
- Correctly say the words for nationalities (Australian, Malaysian, American, Japanese).
- Use "What nationality is he / she? – He’s / She’s ___." to ask and answer questions about someone’s nationality.
- Listen to and understand two communicative contexts in which speakers ask and answer questions about someone’s nationality, and tick the correct pictures.
- Circle the correct options in the sentences and exchanges with the help of picture cues.
- Sing the song My friends with correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about someone’s nationality. b. Organisation: - Teacher asks pupils to look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters and say what they can see.
- Teacher explains the context: + Context a: Minh and his mother in the kitchen, talking about Minh’s new friend. + Context b: Minh’s father joining the conversation, asking about the nationality of Minh’s new friend. - Teacher accesses the digital audio track from the cloud-based educational platform (hoclieu.vn) and streams it directly to the classroom speakers. - Teacher plays the recording and encourages pupils to point at the characters. - Teacher plays the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to repeat. Correct pronunciation where necessary. - Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the question What nationality is he? and the answer He’s Australian. Explain that they are used to talk about someone’s nationality. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

Activity 3: Let's talk a. Objective: To use What nationality is he / she? – He’s / She’s ___. in a freer context. b. Organisation: - Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the picture showing four characters at an exhibition introducing their countries.
- Teacher points at the first character and elicits the question (What nationality is she?) and the answer (She’s Malaysian.) as an example. Write the sentences on the board. - Teacher puts pupils into pairs to ask and answer questions about the nationality of each character in the picture. - Teacher invites a few pairs to the front to ask and answer questions. * Suggested answers: What nationality is she? - She's Malaysian. What nationality is he? - He's Australian. What nationality is she? - She's American. What nationality is he? - He's Japanese. - Teacher assigns pupils to prepare for the project: Tell pupils about the project on page 27. For this project, they should work in groups. Ask them to spend time outside class searching for the names of at least five countries and their nationalities in English. Then they should make a poster to show the names of the countries and nationalities they have found. They may add some details about the countries such as people, flags and maps. Tell them they will present their posters to the class at Project time. - Teacher instructs pupils on how to safely use a simple search engine to find the names of at least five countries and their nationalities in English. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

Activity 5: Read and circle a. Objective: To circle correct options in the sentences and exchanges with the help of picture cues. b. Organisation: - Teacher does Sentence 1 together as an example. - Teacher gives pupils time to do the task independently. Go around to offer help.
- Teacher gets pupils to swap books and check answers. Nominate pupils to write answers on the board and explain why they chose the options.
