UNIT 2: OUR HOMES

Lesson 1 (2 periods)

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone's home.
  • Correctly say the words and use "Do you live in this / that ___? - Yes, I do. / No, I don't." to ask and answer questions about someone's home.
  • Use "Do you live in ___? - Yes, / No, ___." in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which speakers ask and answer questions about their homes, and number the pictures.
  • Complete four gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.
  • Reinforce understanding of words and sentences related to the topic "Our homes" by playing Guessing game.

III. PROCEDURES

a. Objective: To create a friendly and active atmosphere in the class to begin the lesson and introduce the new vocabulary (house, flat, building, tower).

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher introduces the "Hidden Picture" game. Slowly reveal parts of 4 pictures (a house, a flat, a building, a tower) on the slide.

- Teacher can usess an AI generative image tool to create unique, engaging "Hidden Picture" game materials and projects them onto TV.

- Teacher asks pupils: "What is this?"

- Teacher elicits the answers and praise the pupils who guess correctly.

- Teacher leads into the new lesson: "Today we will learn how to ask and answer questions about someone's home in Unit 2, Lesson 1."

Activity 2: Listen, point and say

a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use 'Do you live in this / that ___? - Yes, I do. / No, I don't.' to ask and answer questions about someone's home.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at Pictures a, b, c, d and say what they see. Point at each picture/word and explain the meaning. Explain that 'tower' is another word for a tall building.

- Teacher uses an interactive digital flashcard app (e.g., Quizlet) on the smartboard to show the new words and play the audio.

- Play the first part of the recording to repeat the words (house, flat, building, tower) in chorus and individually. Use flashcards.

- Draw attention to speech bubbles. Play the second part of the recording for pupils to listen and repeat the sentences.

- Let pupils practice asking and answering in pairs.

- Invite a few pairs to stand up and point at each picture to ask and answer.

Activity 4: Listen and number

a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which speakers ask and answer questions about their homes, and number the pictures.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher draws pupils' attention to the pictures and ask questions to elicit the home in each picture, for example, What can you see in this picture? Is it a house? Is it a tower? (a. Sunset Building, b. King Tower, c. a two-floor house, d. Hoa Binh Building).

- The teacher uses hoclieu.vn and pushes the numbering task directly to the students' devices.

- Teacher plays the recording all the way through. Play it again for pupils to listen and number.

- Teacher gets pupils to swap books to check answers. Correct answers as a class.

 

Extension: If time allows, play the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation where necessary.

Activity 6: Let's play

a. Objective: To reinforce understanding of words and sentences related to the topic 'Our homes' by playing Guessing game.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher divides class into Group A and Group B. Explain the game. Each member writes a home on a piece of paper (made up information).

- The teacher instructs pupils to use a digital whiteboard app (e.g., Padlet or Jamboard) instead of paper to draw and write their made-up homes.

- Teacher gives time to figure out the questions and answers.

- Teacher calls members from Group A and B. Group A asks a yes/no question to guess Group B's home. If correct, Group B gets a point. If incorrect, Group A gets a point. Swap roles.
