UNIT 1: FAMILY LIFE

LESSON 5: LISTENING

 

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 

  • Listen for specific information and details in an extract of a talk show about family support.
  • Identify and use key words related to family life and family support.
  • Apply the learnt vocabulary and ideas to speak about their own family experiences. 

2. Competences 

General competences: 

  • Self-control and independent learning: listen and share personal opinions with partners and teacher. 
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks. 

Specific competences: 

  • Listen for specific information about a student's family life and how they helped him achieve success.
  • Identify and use vocabulary related to family routines and support.

Activity 1: Work in pairs. Look at the picture and answer the questions. 

a. Objective: To introduce the topic of the listening extract and activate Ss’ prior knowledge.

b. Content: Students look at the picture, describe it, and guess what the student in the picture is talking about.

c. Product: Students' answers to guiding questions and their guesses about the topic.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher has Ss look at the picture in the textbook and describe it.

- For weaker classes, teacher gives guiding questions: Who are the people? Where are they? What is in the background? What are they doing? What's the boy wearing around his neck?

- Teacher asks Ss to answer question 2 in pairs and guess what the student is talking about.

- Teacher instructs students to ask an AI assistant (like Gemini on their phones) a prompt: "What do people usually talk about in a talk show named Family Life?" to help them form their guesses.

- Teacher divides the board into sections for groups to write their guesses.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students look at the picture, answer basic questions, and read the AI's suggestions to formulate their final guesses.

- The teacher observes, guides, and supports the students.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Groups write their guesses on the board.

- Teacher does not confirm if answers are right or wrong yet; leaves them on the board for later comparison.

Step 4: Evaluation

b. Content: Listen to Track 6 and decide whether the guesses are correct.

c. Product: Students identify the correct topic and guest speaker information.

Activity 3: Listen to the talk show and decide whether the statement are true (T) or false (F).

a. Objective: To help Ss practise listening for details.

b. Content: Read 4 statements, underline keywords, and listen to the recording to decide if they are True (T) or False (F).

c. Product: Students' correct T/F answers.
