UNIT 4: FOR A BETTER COMMUNITY

LESSON 4: SPEAKING

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Give a presentation about the benefits of volunteering activities.
  • Understand and articulate various benefits of volunteer work with specific examples.
  • Use suitable expressions to order points and give examples in a presentation.

2. Competences

General competences:

  • Self-control and independent learning: brainstorm ideas and organize a presentation structure.
  • Communication and collaboration: work effectively in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks and deliver a group presentation.

Specific competences:

  • Speaking skills: deliver a logical, well-structured, and persuasive presentation.

Digital competences:

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge, create an engaging atmosphere, and smoothly lead into the topic of the benefits of volunteering.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a "Word Association - The Volunteer Tree" activity.

c. Product: Students' brainstormed ideas about why people do volunteer work.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher projects a collaborative digital board (e.g., Padlet) named "The Volunteer Tree" and provides a QR code/link.

- Teacher asks: Why do teenagers do volunteer work? What do they get from it? Post ONE benefit on the digital board.

- Time limit: 2 minutes.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students use their devices to access the board and post their ideas.

- The teacher observes and encourages students to think of various reasons (e.g., make friends, learn skills, feel happy).

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Students view the digital tree on the main screen.

- Teacher reads some interesting answers aloud to the class.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher praises the students' ideas and summarizes the main themes.

- Teacher leads into the new lesson: As you can see on our tree, there are many wonderful reasons to volunteer. Today, we will learn how to formally present these ideas in our speaking lesson: Benefits of volunteering activities.

Activity 1: Look at the following benefits of volunteering activities. Choose the THREE most important benefits. 

a. Objective: To introduce more ideas for the main speaking task and get students involved in the lesson.

b. Content: Students read a list of benefits and choose the three they think are the most important.

c. Product: Students' choices and their ability to explain their preferences.

Activity 2: Complete the following diagram with examples and details that explain the benefits of volunteering activities. 

a. Objective: To help students structure their presentation.

- Students work collaboratively in pairs/groups to fill in the missing details.

- Teacher walks round the class and offers help.

a. Objective: To give Ss an opportunity to practise delivering their presentations.

b. Content: Students work in groups, using the structured ideas from Activity 2 and the useful expressions to prepare and deliver a presentation.

c. Product: Students' collaborative group presentations and peer reflections.

Mission 1: Building a Presentation Script

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher distributes Worksheet digitally via a live interactive platform (e.g., Liveworksheets or Google Forms). 

- Teacher sets a time limit of 10 minutes.

Task 1: Fill in the blanks with the correct expressions from the box.

Task 2: Write complete sentences using the provided prompts to build a logical argument.
