UNIT 3: MUSIC

LESSON 4: SPEAKING

 

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Talk about a TV music show using specific details (name, judges, participants, rules, prizes).
  • Brainstorm ideas to create and present their own new music show to the class.

2. Competences

General competences: 

  • Self-control and independent learning: analyze information and note down key ideas.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in groups to brainstorm ideas, discuss, and present a collaborative project.

Specific competences:

  • Speaking skills: Present ideas clearly, ask questions, and give opinions about different music shows.

Digital competences:

II. RESOURCES AND MATERIALS

  • Interactive platforms (e.g., Padlet, Mentimeter, Google Forms).

2. Students' aids

  • Textbook, notebooks, pens, draft paper.
  • Smartphones/Tablets with internet connection.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' background knowledge about popular TV music shows, naturally elicit key vocabulary (judges, participants, vote, perform), and create an engaging, modern atmosphere suitable for 10th graders.

b. Content: Students complete "MISSION: TV SHOW DETECTIVES”. They read short English descriptions containing clues about the rules and formats of 3 famous trending music shows in Vietnam/the world and guess their names.

c. Product: Students successfully identify the shows and point out the keywords related to a TV music show.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher divides the class into small groups of 4.

- Teacher introduces the mission: Welcome, detectives! Your mission today is to read the secret files (clues) about 3 famous TV music shows and guess their names. Pay attention to the highlighted words!

- Teacher projects the 3 "Secret Files" on the screen:

+ File 1: In this show, the participants do not show their real faces. They dress up in beautiful mascot costumes to perform. The judges and the audience have to guess who they are. -> (The Masked Singer)

+ File 2: This is a famous show for underground music. The judges sit on special chairs with pedals. If they like a performance, they will press the pedal to choose that person for their team. -> (Rap Viet / The Voice)

+ File 3: Thousands of normal people can join this competition. There are usually 3 main judges. However, the TV audiences are the ones who vote and decide the final winner. -> (Vietnam Idol)

- Set a time limit of 3 minutes.

- Teacher provides a QR code/link to an interactive board (e.g., Padlet).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students read the clues on the screen, discuss in their groups, and write the names of the 3 shows on their draft papers or mini-boards.

- Groups access the digital board via smartphones to submit their answers.

- The teacher observes, encourages them to use their pop-culture knowledge, and supports if they don't understand the clues.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher says "Time's up!" and displays the digital board with all group submissions on the smart TV.

- Expected Answers:

- Teacher calls on some students to explain which clues helped them guess the correct shows.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher praises the groups with correct answers.

- Teacher leads into the new lesson: Excellent detective work! To talk about a music show, we need to know its rules, who the judges are, and how to win. Today, we will learn how to describe a TV music show in detail and even create a brand new one. Let's start Lesson 4!

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Read about a TV music show and complete the notes below.

b. Content: Students read a description of a show and find information to fill in the missing notes.

Activity 2: Work in groups. Make up a new music show. Use the points in 1 to organise your ideas. 

a. Objective: To help Ss brainstorm ideas for the speaking activity.

b. Content: Students work in groups to create their own music show based on the suggested points in Activity 1.

c. Product: Students' notes of their newly created TV music show.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Ask Ss to refer back to their notes in 1.

- Put Ss into groups. Ask them to brainstorm ideas for their new show, using the suggested points in 1.

- Teacher instructs students to use a Generative AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini) to help generate creative show names or unique rules if they get stuck.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students discuss in groups, create interesting ideas, and take notes.

- Students input prompts into the AI tool (e.g., "Suggest 3 creative names for a new TV music show for teenagers") and adjust the prompts based on the AI's response to fit their specific vision.

- Walk round the class and offer help if necessary.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher checks the progress of each group and asks them to finalize their notes.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher ensures all groups have enough information ready for the presentation.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Activity 3: Present your show to the whole class. Use your ideas in 2 and the expressions below. Vote for the best show. 

a. Objective: To give Ss the opportunity to present their music shows to the class.

b. Content: Groups present their shows, others listen, ask questions, and vote.

c. Product: Group presentations and students' feedback/votes.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the basic vocabulary and expressions needed to talk about a TV music show.

b. Content: Students complete a basic worksheet consisting of two tasks (Fill-in-the-blanks and Sentence matching) to reinforce the lesson's language points.

c. Products: Students' correct answers for the two exercises.

d. Organization:

Mission 1: Complete WORKSHEET 1.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher distributes WORKSHEET 1 digitally via a live interactive platform (e.g., Liveworksheets or Google Forms).

- Teacher sets a time limit of 7 minutes.
