UNIT 5: INVENTIONS

LESSON 5: LISTENING

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Listen for specific information and key words in a conversation about a robot vacuum cleaner (RoboVacuum).
  • Understand instructions on how to use a smart device.
  • Introduce and use topic-related vocabulary (button, charge, stain).
  • Talk about the functions and features of a smart device.

2. Competences 

General competences:

  • Self-control and independent learning: listen and complete tasks independently; share personal opinions.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks and discuss ideas. 

Specific competences:

  • Listening comprehension: practice predicting information, listening for key words, and listening for instructions.
  • Speaking: describe how to use a device and express personal ideas about creating new functions for inventions.

Digital competences:

II. RESOURCES AND MATERIALS 

1. Teacher's aids

  • Textbook Global Success 10, Teacher's Book, Lesson Plan.
  • Computer, projector/smart TV, audio speakers.

2. Students' aids

  • Textbook, notebooks, pens.
  • Smartphones or tablets with internet access.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge about the differences between traditional and smart cleaning devices, preparing them for the main listening topic.

b. Content: Students complete a categorization mission by classifying specific features into "Traditional Vacuum Cleaner" and "Robot Vacuum Cleaner".

c. Product: A completed table with the correct features for each type of device.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher asks students to work in pairs and gives them a quick "Categorization Mission" using a digital collaborative board (e.g., Padlet or Quizizz).

- Mission: Read the 6 features below and put them into the correct columns: "Traditional Vacuum Cleaner" OR "Robot Vacuum Cleaner".

- List of features:

1. Needs a person to push and control it.

2. Cleans the room automatically.

3. Has a long plug-in cord.

4. Runs on a rechargeable battery.

5. Can avoid obstacles (tables, chairs) by itself.

6. Heavy to carry around the house.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students read the phrases carefully, discuss with their partners, and submit their categorized answers via their smartphones/tablets onto the shared digital board.

- The teacher observes the digital submissions in real-time.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher projects the digital board on the smart TV.

- Teacher calls on 2 different pairs to explain their categorized lists shown on the screen.

- Other students observe and check if their answers match.

- Students' Mission Output:

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher checks the answers with the whole class, explaining any difficult vocabulary (e.g., obstacles, rechargeable).

- Teacher leads into the new lesson: As we can see, a robot vacuum cleaner is a very smart invention because it cleans automatically and runs on a battery. Today, we will listen to a conversation about a specific device called RoboVacuum to learn how it works and what its buttons do.

[6.1.NC1a]: Analyze how AI operates in specific applications like the smart obstacle avoidance of a robot vacuum cleaner.

2. PRESENTATION 

Robo Vacuum

Activity 1: Complete the sentences with the words in the box. 

a. Objective: To introduce topic-related vocabulary and activate students' prior knowledge.

b. Content: Students read the words in the box (button, charge, stain) and complete three sentences.

c. Product: Correctly completed sentences with the new vocabulary.

Activity 2: Listen to a conversation about RoboVacuum. Fill in each gap in the diagram with ONE word. 

a. Objective: To help students practice listening for key words.

b. Content: Students listen to a conversation between a woman and a salesman and fill in the gaps in a diagram of the RoboVacuum.

c. Product: Students' correct answers in the diagram.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher tells Ss they are going to listen to a conversation about RoboVacuum.

- Ask Ss to study the diagram first. Demonstrate how to use the Tips box (e.g., predict if the missing word is a noun, verb, or adjective).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students predict the answers.

- Teacher plays the recording (Track 38) once for stronger classes, twice for weaker classes.

- Students listen and type their answers into a shared interactive form (consists of the recording) from hoclieu.vn.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- If time allows, ask Ss to discuss their answers in pairs.

- Teacher calls on students to write their answers on the board.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher checks answers as a class. Play the recording again, pausing after each answer to confirm.

- Extension: Have Ss listen for instructions and write them in order.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

b. Content: Students look at 3 pictures, listen to part 2 of the conversation, and decide the right or wrong ways to use the device.

c. Product: Correct ticks (✓) and crosses (✗) for the pictures.

Activity 4: What other buttons do you want RoboVacuum to have? Add them to the picture below and tell your friends about them.

a. Objective: To give students an opportunity to personalize the language and ideas from the listening in a speaking task.

b. Content: Students draw and add new buttons to the RoboVacuum picture and present them to the class.

c. Product: A customized drawing of RoboVacuum and an oral presentation of the new features.

d. Organization:

- Students digitally draw and label their own buttons to customize their smart appliances.

- The teacher walks around the class and offers help with vocabulary.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Put Ss in groups to show their drawings to each other and share ideas using the example language.

- Invite some Ss to present their improved RoboVacuum in front of the class.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher praises for interesting ideas, good delivery, and correct grammar usage.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the vocabulary, context, and grammar structures (giving instructions/imperatives) learned in the listening lesson.

b. Content: Students complete one written mission consisting of two tasks (Summary gap-fill and Sentence construction).

c. Products: Students' correct written answers in their notebooks.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To help students apply the vocabulary, instructional language, and creative thinking into a real-life, project-based context.

b. Content: Students carry out a creative take-home task: "My Smart Appliance Manual".

c. Product: A mini-poster or a short written manual describing a newly invented smart appliance and how to use it.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher gives instructions for the take-home project.

- Task: Choose an ordinary household appliance (e.g., a fridge, a washing machine, a fan, a mirror). Turn it into a "Smart" invention by adding 3 new, special buttons/functions.

- Ss design a digital mini-poster or manual (using Canva or similar apps) showing the appliance with its new buttons.

- Write a short "User Manual" (4-5 sentences) giving instructions on how to use these new functions (Use imperative verbs like Press, Put, Do not, Avoid).

- Ss upload the final digital product to the class Padlet.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks 

- Students brainstorm, digitally draw, and write their manuals at home.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion 

- In the next lesson, teacher will open the class Padlet on the smart board for a "Virtual Gallery Walk".

- Students will read their friends' manuals online and vote digitally for the most creative invention.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher evaluates based on creativity, correct use of instructional language, and effort in presentation.
