UNIT 3: MUSIC

LESSON 6. WRITING

 

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Write a short blog about their personal experience at a music event.
  • Identify and correctly use vocabulary related to locations, atmospheres, activities, and feelings to describe an event.

2. Competences

General competences:

  • Self-control and independent learning: Read sample texts independently and brainstorm ideas for their own writing.
  • Communication and collaboration: Work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks and play games.

Specific competences:

  • Read a blog for specific information.
  • Sort words and phrases to describe experiences.

Digital competences:

  • Collaborative digital platforms (Padlet /Mentimeter, Google Classroom /Microsoft Teams).

2. Students' aids

  • Textbook, notebooks, pens.
  • Smartphones, tablets, or laptops with internet access.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create an engaging atmosphere and activate students' interest in music events.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a quick brainstorming activity about music events.

c. Product: Students' engagement and vocabulary related to concerts/events.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher projects a QR code for a digital collaborative board (e.g., Padlet or Mentimeter) titled "MUSIC EVENT” on the smart TV.

- Teacher asks Ss to work in pairs, use their devices to scan the code, and submit 3 things they usually see or do at a music event in 1 minute.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Ss use their smartphones to scan the QR code, brainstorm, and type their ideas onto the digital platform.

- Teacher observes and encourages Ss.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher invites some pairs to explain the words they submitted on the digital board (e.g., singers, fans, sing along, stage, loud music).

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher praises the Ss and leads into the lesson: Today we will learn how to write a blog about an experience at a music event.

[2.1.NC1a]: Students use smartphones to access a collaborative digital platform via QR code, select appropriate digital tools to interact, and submit their brainstormed ideas in real-time.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Ann has just come back from a music event and shared her experience on a music website. Read her blog and complete the notes below.

a. Objective: To provide an example blog on a music website, which Ss can use as a model for their writing.

b. Content: Students read Ann's blog individually and complete the given notes.

c. Product: Completed notes with correct information from the text.

Activity 2: Work in groups. Put the words and phrases in the box below into the appropriate columns. Some words and phrases can go into more than one column. 

a. Objective: To provide Ss with useful words and phrases to describe experiences and help develop ideas for their writing.

b. Content: Students categorize the given words/phrases into Location, Atmosphere, Activities, and Feeling.

c. Product: Correct categorization of vocabulary.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks Ss to look at the words in the box.

- Teacher elicits the meanings of any words Ss do not understand.

- Teacher instructs groups to use a Generative AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini) to find 2 extra words for each category.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Teacher puts Ss into groups.

- Ss discuss and put the words/phrases into suitable columns.

- Then, they prompt an AI tool on their devices (e.g., "Give me 2 adjectives describing a concert atmosphere suitable for 10th-grade English") and critically filter the AI's suggestions.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on some groups to write their answers on the board.

- The rest of the class comments on the way they have sorted the words.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the correct answers and asks Ss to copy them into their notebooks.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Activities: watch fireworks, take photos, play musical instruments, play games, see art exhibitions

[6.2.NC1a]: Students use Generative AI chatbots on their devices to expand their vocabulary by inputting specific prompts related to music events.

[1.2.NC1b]: Students critically evaluate the vocabulary generated by the AI tool to ensure it is accurate, natural, and suitable for their English level before presenting it to the class.

Activity 3: Image you went to a music event. Write a blog (about 120 words) to share your experience. Use the notes in 1 and the words and phrases in 2 to help you. 

a. Objective: To help Ss practise writing a blog about their personal experience at a music event.

b. Content: Students write a short blog using the provided model and vocabulary.

c. Product: Students' written blog drafts.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To reinforce basic sentence structures and core vocabulary describing events.

b. Content: Students complete WORKSHEET 1 containing two basic tasks focusing on forming correct sentences and using given words.

d. Organization: Mission 1: Complete WORKSHEET 1.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher distributes WORKSHEET 1 digitally via a live interactive platform (e.g., Liveworksheets or Google Forms).

- Time limit: 5 minutes.

Task 1: Circle the correct word to complete the sentence.
