Written about the benefits of an invention

Activity 1: Choose an invention in this unit. Draw a diagram to show how it is used. Then work in groups to guess one another's inventions.

a. Objective: To introduce the topic of the lesson and liven up the atmosphere of the class before the lesson.

b. Content: Students draw a diagram listing the benefits of an invention and guess each other's inventions.

c. Product: Students' drawn diagrams and correct guesses.

d. Organization:

TEACHER'S AND STUDENTS' ACTIVITIESEXPECTED PRODUCTSDIGITAL SKILL

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks Ss to read the three uses of AI listed in the diagram and guess the invention without looking at the page, then check their books.

- Teacher asks each student to choose an invention from the unit (or a new one) and keep it secret.

- Teacher instructs Ss to interact with an AI chatbot on their devices to research 3 distinct benefits of their secret invention to use as clues.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students use smartphones/laptops to prompt an AI chatbot (e.g., ChatGPT/Gemini) to generate functional benefits of their invention.

- Students use a digital mind-mapping tool (e.g., Canva or MindMeister) to create and format their diagrams.

- Teacher puts Ss into groups of four or six.

- Ss display their digital diagrams on their screens for others to guess the inventions.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher allows each student to make three guesses and write them down.

- Ss go through the guesses and confirm the correct ones in their groups.

- Ask each group to report back to the class, summarising the inventions and correct guesses.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher praises the groups with the most correct guesses and checks spelling/vocabulary if necessary.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Diagram on board/screen:

- At work: plan holidays...

- In transport: find best routes...

- At home: clean the house...

-> Answer: Artificial Intelligence.

[6.1.NC1a]: Students interact with an AI chatbot on their devices to analyze how a specific invention works and extract its key benefits for clue generation.

[3.1.NC1a]: Students use digital mind-mapping applications (Canva/MindMeister) to create and format their diagrams in a digital format.

Activity 2: Rewrite the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first. Use the expressions and the prompts below to help you.

a. Objective: To help Ss revise useful expressions and structures which they can use in their writing task.

b. Content: Students study the useful expressions box and rewrite 4 sentences.

c. Product: 4 correctly rewritten sentences using the given structures.

d. Organization:

Activity 3: Write a paragraph (120 - 150 words) to describe two or three benefits of the invention you chose in 1. Use the outline below to help you.

a. Objective: To practise developing ideas and writing a paragraph.

b. Content: Students write a paragraph following the suggested outline (Introduction, Development, Conclusion).

c. Product: A complete, well-structured paragraph of 120 - 150 words.

d. Organization:

TEACHER'S AND STUDENTS' ACTIVITIESEXPECTED PRODUCTSDIGITAL SKILL

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher tells Ss they are going to write a paragraph (120-150 words) about the invention chosen in 1.

- Ask them to study the outline. Teacher projects and reads the sample answer (Electricity) to make sure Ss understand how it follows the outline.

- Remind them to use the structures practised in 2.

- Teacher instructs Ss to draft their paragraphs on a cloud-based word processor (e.g., Google Docs).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Teacher sets a time limit of ten minutes.

- Students type and format their paragraphs on Google Docs.

- Students are encouraged to use an AI-powered writing assistant (e.g., Grammarly) to check for grammar, spelling, and phrasing errors.

- Teacher walks round the class to offer help if necessary.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Students generate a shareable link of their Google Doc and send it to a partner's device.

- Partners use the "Suggesting" or "Comment" feature on Google Docs to peer-review ideas, vocabulary, and grammar.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher collects the digital links to all paragraphs to provide targeted digital feedback later.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Outline:

- First sentence: What is it?

- Supporting sentences: 1st benefit + example, 2nd benefit + example...

- Last sentence: How important is it?

[3.1.NC1a]: Students type, edit, and format their paragraphs using a cloud-based word processor (Google Docs).

[6.2.NC1a]: Students optimize their writing workflow by utilizing AI grammar checking tools (e.g., Grammarly) to identify and self-correct language errors.

[2.2.NC1a]: Students generate and share digital document links with peers, utilizing digital commenting features for collaborative peer review.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the vocabulary and grammar structures learned in the lesson through deep-focus academic exercises.

b. Content: Students complete two written tasks (Sentence building and Error correction) to master the language of describing benefits.

c. Products: Students' correct sentences on the worksheet.

d. Organization:

…………………………………………..

…………………………………………..

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To help students apply the vocabulary, structures, and writing format into a highly creative, real-life context at home.

b. Content: Students carry out a creative take-home project: "The Next Big Thing: Inventor's Pitch".

c. Product: A mini-poster about a self-created invention.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher gives the instruction: Think of a common problem in your daily student life (e.g., waking up early, carrying heavy books). Invent a futuristic machine or tool to solve it.

- Task requirements:

1. Use a graphic design software (e.g., Canva) to design a digital mini-poster illustrating your invention.

2. Type a short "Promotional Pitch" (about 80 - 100 words) directly onto the digital poster using the expressions learned today (enable us to, are used for, one of the benefits...) to highlight its top 2 benefits.

3. Prepare to "sell" it to the class in the next speaking/review lesson.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students write down the requirements. They will brainstorm, draw, and write their pitch at home.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher provides a link to a class digital gallery (e.g., Padlet). Students are instructed to upload their finished digital posters to this link before the next class.

- Teacher informs students that they will do a "Gallery Walk" in the next class where they display their posters and vote for the most useful invention.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher summarizes the lesson, emphasizing the structures for writing about benefits.

[3.1.NC1a]: Students design and format a multimedia digital poster using graphic design software (Canva), integrating text and digital imagery.

[2.2.NC1a]: Students share their digital posters by uploading them to a shared class Padlet, enabling a virtual gallery walk for peer engagement.

* HOMEWORK

- Complete the "Inventor's Pitch" mission in Application.

- Review useful expressions and structures to describe the uses of inventions.

- Prepare for the next lesson: Lesson 7 - Communication and Culture / CLIL.
