LESSON 3: READING

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Understand the context and read for general ideas and specific information about popular TV music shows (American Idol, The X Factor).
• Guess the meanings of words and phrases in context.
• Talk about whether they want to participate in a music competition and give basic reasons.

2. Competences

General competences: 

• Self-control and independent learning: read the text actively and complete reading tasks.
• Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to discuss opinions and share answers.

Specific competences:

• Develop reading skills like skimming for main ideas and scanning for specific details.
• Use target vocabulary related to music shows in basic written and spoken exercises.

• Short audio clips of theme songs from famous music shows (e.g., Vietnam Idol, The Voice).

• Textbook, notebooks, pens, colored pencils (for the application task at home).
• Smartphones/tablets with Internet access.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Work in pairs. Look at the pictures and discuss the following questions: What are these shows? What do you know about them? 

a. Objective: To introduce the topic of the reading and get Ss involved in the lesson.

b. Content: Students look at the logos of American Idol and The X Factor and discuss questions in pairs.

c. Product: Students' answers and background knowledge about the two shows.

d. Organization:

Activity 2: Read the text about a famous music show. Match the highlighted words and phrases in the text with the meanings below. 

a. Objective: To help Ss practise guessing the meanings of words and phrases in context.

b. Content: Students read the text, use context clues to guess the meanings of highlighted words, and match them with definitions.

c. Product: Students' correct matching answers.

Activity 3: Read the text again and choose the best answers. 

a. Objective: To help Ss practise reading for specific information.

b. Content: Students read 5 multiple-choice questions, underline key words, and scan the text to find the correct answers.

d. Organization:

Activity 4: Work in pairs. Discuss whether you want to participate in Vietnam Idol. Give your reasons. 

a. Objective: To help Ss use the ideas and language in the reading to talk about whether they want to take part in Vietnam Idol and give reasons.

b. Content: Students make notes and discuss their opinions in pairs.

c. Product: A short summary of the students' discussion.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the core vocabulary and ensure reading comprehension through basic, highly focused exercises without overwhelming students with too many words.

b. Content: Students complete one practical mission consisting of two fundamental tasks (Fill in the blanks and Short answer).

c. Products: Students' correct written answers.

d. Organization:

Mission 1: Lesson Review Worksheet

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher distributes the worksheet digitally via a live interactive platform (e.g., Liveworksheets or Google Forms).

- Teacher sets a time limit of 7 minutes.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students work individually on their devices to select and type the basic answers into the interactive worksheet.

- Teacher observes, ensuring the tasks are basic enough for all students to reinforce their knowledge without feeling pressured.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- The platform automatically grades the basic exercises.

- Teacher invites Ss to share their answers with the class.

- For Task 1, Ss read the whole sentences aloud. For Task 2, Ss provide their short answers.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To help students apply the vocabulary and ideas from the reading lesson into a basic writing task about a real-life TV show.

b. Content: Students write a short paragraph (4 - 5 sentences) about a real TV music show in Viet Nam that they know.

c. Product: A short paragraph written in the students' notebooks.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher assigns a writing task for homework: Write a short paragraph (4 - 5 sentences) about a real TV music show in Viet Nam.

- Teacher provides basic guiding questions to help students write easily:

1. What is the name of the show? (e.g., Vietnam Idol, Rap Viet, The Voice...)

2. Who are the judges?

3. How is the winner decided? (by public vote, by judges...)

4. Do you like watching it? Why or why not?

- Remind Ss to use the vocabulary learned in the lesson (e.g., competition, judges, vote, winner).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students complete the writing task at home individually.

- Students use an AI grammar checking tool to review their draft. They evaluate the AI's suggestions to improve their writing while maintaining their original ideas, actively minimizing the ethical risk of AI plagiarism.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion (Next Lesson)

- At the beginning of the next lesson, teacher asks 2 - 3 students to stand up and read their paragraphs aloud to the class.

- Expected paragraph:

My favourite TV music show is Rap Viet. It is a very popular music competition in Viet Nam. There are four famous judges on the show. The winner is decided by the judges and the audience's votes. I like this show because the songs are very exciting.

- Teacher can also collect some notebooks to check their writing.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher gives feedback on grammar and vocabulary usage, focusing on the target words of the lesson.
