UNIT 5: INVENTIONS

LESSON 3: READING

   

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Set the context for the reading text about Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Read for the main idea and specific information in a text about AI and its applications in daily life.
  • Understand and use vocabulary related to the topic of AI and robots.

2. Competences

General competences:

  • Self-control and independent learning: Read the text and locate specific information independently.
  • Communication and collaboration: Work in pairs or groups to discuss the questions and complete the reading tasks. 

Specific competences:

  • Read and understand the text about the development and applications of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Skim for the best title and scan for specific details to complete matching and True/False tasks.

Digital competences:

  • [1.1.NC1b]: Apply search techniques to retrieve data, information, and digital content in digital environments.
  • [1.2.NC1b]: Evaluate different types of data, information, and digital content.

II. RESOURCES AND MATERIALS

1. Teacher's aids

  • Textbook Global Success 10, Teacher's Book, Lesson Plan.
  • Computer, projector/smart TV, audio speakers.
  • Links/QR codes to digital collaborative boards (e.g., Padlet), online quizzes (e.g., Quizizz), and shared class drives.

2. Students' aids

  • Textbook, notebooks, pens, colored pencils.
  • Personal digital devices (smartphones/tablets/laptops) with internet access.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP 

a. Objective: To activate students' prior knowledge, create an engaging atmosphere, and smoothly lead into the topic of Artificial Intelligence.

b. Content: Teacher organizes a brainstorming activity called "What Can Machines Do?". 

c. Product: Students' list of tasks and actions that machines or robots can do in modern life.

d. Organization:

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher divides the class into 4 groups.

- Teacher shares a QR code/link to a collaborative digital board (e.g., Padlet).

- Teacher asks students to work together and use their smartphones to type and submit as many tasks as possible that machines/robots can do today within 2 minutes on the digital board (e.g., clean the floor, play chess).

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it. 

- Students access the digital board on their devices and simultaneously input their ideas.

- The teacher observes and encourages students to think creatively.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls time out and reviews the digital board on the main screen.

- Students' expected answers: clean the house, serve food, play games, drive cars, talk to people, grade papers, etc.

- Other groups cross out the duplicated ideas and add new ones.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher counts the valid ideas, declares the winning group, and leads into the new lesson: Machines can do many things like humans now. This ability is thanks to AI. Today we will learn about Artificial Intelligence and how it is used.

[2.4.NC1a]: Students use their personal digital devices to access a collaborative digital platform, proposing and organizing their collective ideas simultaneously in a shared digital environment.

2. PRESENTATION 

Artificial Intelligence

Activity 1: Look at the pictures of Asimo and Sophia and discuss the questions below in pairs.

a. Objective: To introduce the topic of the reading and get students involved in the lesson.

b. Content: Students look at pictures of two famous robots, answer questions in pairs, and learn the definition of AI.

c. Product: Students can identify the robots and brainstorm what they can do.

Activity 2: Read the text below and choose the best title for it. 

a. Objective: To help students practise reading for the main idea.

b. Content: Students read the text once and choose the best title among four options (A, B, C, D).

c. Product: Students select the correct title that covers the main idea of the whole text.

Step 1: Teacher assigns learning tasks

- Teacher asks students to read the whole text once to get an overall idea.

- Teacher tells students to work in groups to discuss the best option and compare answers.

- The teacher observes and monitors the reading process.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on some students to give their answers.

- In stronger classes, teacher asks students to explain why the other options cannot be used as titles.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the correct answer and provides explanations if needed (e.g., A - doesn't focus on development; B - doesn't only mention robots; D - doesn't mention education).

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

a. Objective: To help students further practise reading for specific information.

b. Content: Students read 3 statements and decide whether they are True (T) or False (F).

- Teacher draws students' attention to the 3 statements and checks comprehension.

- Teacher asks students to read the text again to find information containing the answers.

Step 2: Students perform learning tasks

- Students read the text again, then use their smartphones to select T or F on the digital platform.

- Students compare and discuss their answers in pairs.

Step 3: Reporting and Discussion

- Teacher calls on some students to give answers.

- Teacher asks them to explain their answers by reading the specific sentences from the text.

Step 4: Evaluation

- Teacher confirms the correct answers and explains the false statement.

- Teacher distributes Worksheet digitally via a live interactive platform (e.g., Liveworksheets or Google Forms). 

Task 1: Fill in each blank with ONE suitable word from the box. There is one extra word.
