2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about where someone was in the past.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher asks pupils to look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters (Bill and Mai). Let them answer the question Where was Mai yesterday? (at home).

- Teacher asks pupils to look at Picture a. Play the recording of the first dialogue for them to listen. Play the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation where necessary. Repeat the same procedure with Picture b.

- The teacher projects the digital textbook on the interactive smartboard and uses the digital highlighter tool to highlight the key verbs 'was' and 'were' in red.

- Teacher invites a few pairs to listen to and repeat the sentences in the recording.

- Teacher draws their attention to the question "Were all your family at home?" and the answer "Yes, we were." Explain that were is used instead of was with you, we, they. Tell pupils that the question and answer are about where someone was in the past.

Extension: Invite a few pupils to the front of the class and write the words they have learnt related to the topic (e.g. museum, supermarket, bakery, zoo, park) on the board. Then let them make sentences with the words (e.g. I was at the museum yesterday).

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Pupils look at the pictures and describe the context.

* Context: 

a. Bill asking Mai where she was yesterday. She was at home.

b. Bill asking Mai if her family were at home and what they did.

- Pupils listen to the recording and follow along in their screen.

- Pupils show how to edit content by using the highlight feature on their personal tablets to mark the past tense verbs in their digital books just like the teacher. 

- Pupils pay attention to their pronunciation.

- Pairs stand up and role-play the exchanges.

- Pupils observe the target structure (Were you/we/they...) and take notes.

- Pupils brainstorm places and practice making simple past sentences.

Activity 3: Let's talk.

a. Objective: To use Were you at the _____ yesterday? – Yes, we were. / No, we weren’t. in a freer context.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the pictures. Ask questions to help them identify the contexts. Have them say the four words aloud.

- Teacher has pupils look at the first bubble. Explain that they should fill in the gap with the places in the pictures. Ask them to look at the second bubble and use Yes, we were. if they were in the place at some point in the past and No, we weren't. if they weren't. You may write the complete question and answer on the board as an example.

- Set a time limit for pupils to work in pairs, point at the pictures and ask and answer. Go around the classroom to observe and offer help.

- Invite a few pairs to point at the pictures and ask and answer questions in front of the class. Praise them if they perform well.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Pupils observe the scenes and recall the vocabulary for the locations.

* Context: two boys at a funfair; many children at a theatre; two girls at a campsite; some children at an aquarium.

- Pupils follow the teacher's model to complete the sentences verbally.

- Pupils work in pairs, freely choosing places in the picture to ask about and giving the correct answers based on the visual cues.

- Pairs perform their role-play for the class confidently.

Activity 5: Read and complete.

a. Objective: To complete four gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher does Exchange 1 together as an example. Have pupils read the exchange. Draw their attention to the first gap and explain that the place Linh and her friend(s) were last weekend should go here. Let them look at the picture and identify the place (the funfair). Then have pupils look at the second gap and identify that the answer should be we were.

- The teacher creates a collaborative digital worksheet on a shared platform (e.g., Google Docs) and assigns different gapped exchanges to different pairs.

- Teacher gives pupils time to do the rest of the task independently. Go around the classroom to offer help where necessary.

- Teacher gets pupils to swap books with a partner and check their answers.

- Invite a few pairs to act out the complete exchanges in front of the class.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Pupils observe the visual cues and read the incomplete dialogues. Pupils follow the teacher's instructions for the first item.

- Pupils select routine digital tools by accessing the shared document on their tablets and collaboratively typing the missing words into their assigned sections in real-time.

- Pupils work independently to write the correct words (locations and was/were forms).

- Pupils swap books to check.

- Pairs stand up and read the completed dialogues aloud to the class.

a. Objective: To consolidate vocabulary (outdoor places) and grammar structures (Past Simple of 'to be' with we/they) in written form.

b. Organisation:

Mission 1: 

Task 1: Match the sentence halves.

- Teacher hands out a mini-worksheet to each pupil.

Task 2: Choose the correct answer A, B, or C.

- Teacher asks pupils to read the 5 questions carefully and choose the correct answer (A, B or C).

- Teacher uses kenhhoctap to host the multiple-choice questions for real-time collaborative practice.
