2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about activities someone did on a school trip.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher accesses and play the digital audio file from the smart textbook platform.

- Teacher asks pupils to look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters (Mai and Nam). Let the class answer the question Where did Mary and Bill go on the school trip last weekend? Check comprehension.

- Teacher asks pupils to look at Picture a. Play the recording of the first dialogue for them to listen and familiarise themselves with the characters' voices. Play the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat. Correct their pronunciation where necessary.

- Teacher repeats the same procedure with Picture b. Draw pupils' attention to the question "What did they do there?" and the answer "They visited the buildings." Explain that they are used to ask and answer questions about activities someone did in the past.

- Teacher invites a few pairs to the front of the class to listen to and repeat both dialogues.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Pupils access the digital textbook content on personal tablets to follow the dialogue.

- Pupils look at the pictures and describe the context.

* Context: 

a. Mai asks where Mary and Bill went. Nam says they went to Ba Na Hills.

b. Mai asks what they did. Nam says they visited the buildings.

- Pupils listen to the recording and follow along in their tablet.

- Pupils pay attention to their pronunciation.

- Pupils listen to the teacher's explanation of the target structure (What did they do...? / They + V-ed).

- Pairs stand up and role-play the exchanges confidently.

Activity 3: Let's talk.

a. Objective: To use Where did they go last weekend? - They ____. and What did they do there? - They ____. in a freer context.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher asks pupils to look at the pictures and identify the places and the activities.

- Teacher asks questions such as Where were they? and What did they do? Remind them that the first exchange is about the place someone went to and the second is about the activities they did.

- Teacher gives pupils time to work in pairs and take turns pointing at the pictures and acting out the exchanges. Remind them to use the past tense of the verbs in the answers.

- Teacher invites a few pairs to come to the front of the class, point at a picture and act out an exchange.

Extension: Put pupils into pairs and have them take turns practising the target structures with different places and activities of their choosing.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Pupils observe the scenes and recall both locations and past activities.

* Context: children playing games at Suoi Tien Theme Park; planting trees on a farm; walking around Hoan Kiem Lake; visiting the old buildings in Hoi An.

- Pupils answer the teacher's prompting questions to review the vocabulary.

- Pupils work in pairs, asking and answering two consecutive questions using the target structures based on the visual cues.

- Pairs perform their role-play for the class.

- Pupils creatively apply the structure to their own ideas (e.g., went to the cinema / watched a film).

Activity 5: Read and complete.

a. Objective: To complete two gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher does the first gapped exchange with the class as an example. Have pupils read the first question and guess the missing words (go) and the answer (they did). Then ask them to read the second answer and guess the missing words. Draw pupils' attention to the picture and elicit the activity (visited; buildings) and have them fill in the gaps.

- Teacher shares a collaborative digital document containing the gapped text on the interactive whiteboard.

- Teacher gives pupils a time limit to complete the second gapped exchange independently. Go around and offer help where necessary.

- Teacher gets pupils to swap books with a partner and check their answers. Invite one pupil to write the answers on the board.

- Invite two pairs of pupils to act out the completed exchanges in front of the class.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Pupils observe the visual cues (visiting old buildings; planting trees on a farm).

- Pupils follow the teacher's instructions to deduce the missing auxiliary verbs (go/did) and past tense action verbs.

- Pupils collaboratively type missing words into the shared digital document.

- Pupils work independently to write the correct words in the gaps.

- Pupils swap books to check.

- One pupil writes on the board.

- Pairs stand up and read the completed dialogues aloud to the class.
