UNIT 3: AT THE STREET MARKET

Lesson 1 (1 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Pronounce the sound of the letter A/a in isolation and in the words apple, bag, can, hat correctly.
  • Point to the letter A/a, the things (apple, bag, can, hat) in the picture and say the sound of the letter A/a and the words correctly.
  • Revise the words they have learnt in previous units and in Unit 3.

  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the pointing and saying tasks.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Listen and repeat.

a. Objective: Pupils will be able to pronounce the sound of the letter A/a in isolation and in the words apple, bag, can, hat correctly.

b. Organisation:

- Have pupils look at the picture, saying "Look at the picture, please!" Ask questions: "Who are they? Where are they? What are they doing?" Draw attention to the words and the red letter A/a. Check comprehension.

- Select simple digital technologies to interact by using an interactive smartboard to display the digital textbook from sachmem.net and embedding interactive audio hotspots on the objects.

   

   

- Ask pupils to point to the letter A/a. Have them listen and repeat the sound, saying "Listen and repeat, please!" more than once.

- Tell pupils to point to the hat and the word hat, saying "Point to the hat and the word 'hat'." Ask them to listen and repeat the word. Play recording again for choral/individual repetition. Correct pronunciation.

- Repeat the same procedure with the words apple, bag and can. Correct pronunciation.

- Play the recording again. Have them listen, point to the letter A/a and the words apple, bag, can, hat and repeat until confident. Give support if needed.

- Call a few pupils to pronounce the sound A/a and the 4 words in front of the class. Say "Great!" when they perform well.

- Pupils follow the procedure for apple, bag, can.

   

- Pupils listen, point, and repeat the whole sequence confidently.

Activity 2: Point and say.

a. Objective: Pupils will be able to point to the letter A/a, the things (apple, bag, can, hat) in the picture and say the sound of the letter A/a and words apple, bag, can, hat.

Fun corner: Game "Hot seat"

a. Objective: Pupils will revise the words they have learnt through the game Hot seat.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils they are going to play Hot seat. Explain the rules.

- Divide the class into teams of 4. Call one pupil from each team to sit on the "hot seat", facing the classroom.

- Use a safe image search tool to quickly display a picture of the target word (e.g., bag) on the smartboard behind the hot seat. Ask team members to describe/mime it to help the pupil on the hot seat guess.

- Continue until each member has described a word. Give one star for each right word.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

- Pupils form teams and choose a representative for the hot seat.

- Observe the digitally searched images on the board as visual cues to effectively mime the word.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To practice recognizing and writing the letter a within the target words (apple, bag, can, hat) and reinforce vocabulary through exercises.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To consolidate the vocabulary (apple, bag, can, hat) through a creative drawing activity and speaking practice at home.

b. Organisation:

Mission: "My Little Market Poster"

- Teacher explains the mission with a cheerful voice: "Tonight, you will be the owners of a street market stall! Take a piece of paper and draw a beautiful market stall. On your stall, you must draw 4 things we learned today: an apple, a bag, a can, and a hat."

- "Color them beautifully. Then, invite your mom and dad to your stall. Point to your drawings and say the English words loudly to sell your items: 'Apple! Bag! Can! Hat!'"

   

   

- "Remember to bring your drawing to our next class. We will stick all of them on the board to build a big 'Classroom Market'!"

- Teacher encourages parents to record this mother-child dialogue roleplay and upload the video to the class's shared digital platforms.

- Teacher praises the class for their hard work and encourages them to be creative.

CONSOLIDATION 

- Teacher reviews the sound of letter A/a and the 4 target words: apple, bag, can, hat.

- Teacher comments on the class's energy and evaluates pupils' participation. Praise the whole class.
