UNIT 3: AT THE SEASIDE

Lesson 1 (1 period)

   

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Correctly pronounce the name of the letter S/s and the sound /s/, both in isolation and in the words sail, sand and sea.
  • Correctly identify and pronounce the words sail, sand and sea.
  • Match and successfully recall the position of target words and pictures through the Pelmanism game.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To correctly pronounce the name of the letter S/s and the sound /s/, both in isolation and in the words sail, sand and sea.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils’ attention to the picture (say “Look at the picture.”). Ask questions to help them identify the context: "The sun is shining. A father, son and daughter are sailing on the sea. The father is controlling the sail. The son is fishing. The daughter is looking at the sand."

- Have pupils point to the letter S/s (say “Point to the letter S.”). Explain that the name of the letter S/s is different from its sound (say “Listen. /es/ /s/.”).

- Play the recording from sachmem.net of the name and sound of the letter S/s and encourage pupils to repeat. Do this several times, individually and in chorus.

   

   

- Have pupils look at the sail. Have them point to the word sail. Draw their attention to the colour of the letter s (red).

- Play the recording of sail and encourage pupils to repeat individually and in chorus.

- Repeat for sand and sea.

- Play the recording in full. Encourage pupils to repeat the name, sound, and words.

- Teacher introduces a simple AI voice-recognition tool (eg., Native Speech,...) on a tablet or Smartboard. Teacher models how to speak "sail," "sand," and "sea" into the AI tool to get visual feedback (e.g., a smiley face pops up if pronounced correctly).

- Pupils listen carefully to the difference between the letter name and the sound.

- Selected pupils use the microphone to speak the basic words into the AI tool. a. Objective: To match and successfully recall the position of target words and pictures.

b. Organisation:

- Divide the class into small teams. Say "You are going to play Pelmanism."

- Flashcards are shuffled and placed face down.

- Explain that team members should take turns to turn over two cards. Ask: "Do the word and the picture match?" If they match, the member scores one star. If they do not match, both cards face down again.

- Play the game from sachmem.net. The first team to match all the words and pictures wins.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

   

- Pupils work in small teams.

   

- Pupils listen to the instructions.

- Pupils take turns turning over two cards, practicing matching the visual pictures with the vocabulary.

a. Objective: To practice recognizing the written form of the words sea, sand, sail, reinforce fine motor skills through tracing, and connect the words to their visual meanings.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To consolidate vocabulary through a creative, visual home task that involves family interaction.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher assigns the task: "My Mini Seaside".

- Give each pupil a worksheet with an empty beach background.

- Task requirement: At home, draw 3 things you learned today on the beach (the sea, the sand, and a boat with a sail). Color the picture beautifully.

- Speaking task: Point to your drawing and teach your mother/father the 3 English words (sea, sand, sail) and the sound /s/. 

   

- Teacher encourages parents to help students use "AutoDraw" (a basic AI drawing tool) to draw their mini seaside on a phone/tablet, or to record a short video of the child teaching the words.

- Remind pupils to bring the drawing to the next class for an exhibition.

* CONSOLIDATION

- Teacher reviews the letter S, sound /s/, and vocabulary (sea, sand, sail).

- Teacher evaluates pupils' participation.

* ADVICE

- Do the "My Mini Seaside" drawing and speaking task at home.
