UNIT 1: HELLO

Lesson 2 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on greetings, responding to greetings and saying goodbye.
  • Correctly say the words and use Hi. How are you? and Fine, thank you. to greet and respond to greetings, and Goodbye. / Bye. to say goodbye.
  • Enhance the correct use of target sentences to greet, respond, and say goodbye in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils greet each other, respond with thanks, and say goodbye, then number the correct pictures.
  • Read and match pairs of target sentence patterns.
  • Practise using the target sentence patterns by playing the game Hello and goodbye.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on greetings, responding to greetings and saying goodbye.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher asks pupils to look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters (Ben and Mai).

- Teacher accesses sachmem.net to play the organized digital audio files and e-flashcards on the smartboard.

   

- Point at Picture a. Play the recording for pupils to listen.

- Play the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation. Repeat with Picture b.

- Invite a few pairs to the front of the classroom to listen to and repeat the sentences in the recording.

- Draw pupils' attention to the sentences Hi, Mai. How are you? – Fine, thank you. and Goodbye, Mai. – Bye, Ben. Tell pupils that these sentences are used to greet, respond, and say goodbye.

a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use Hi. How are you? and Fine, thank you. to greet and respond to greetings, and Goodbye. / Bye. to say goodbye.

Activity 3: Let's talk.

a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of Hi. How are you? and Fine, thank you. to greet and respond to greetings, and Goodbye. / Bye. to say goodbye in a freer context.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils' attention to the picture (two pairs of pupils in the school playground). Ask questions to help them identify the context.

- Elicit the missing words in the speech bubbles and write them on the board. Get pupils to say the completed sentences. Correct pronunciation.

- Teacher guides students to use a simple AI voice-recognition (eg., Native Speech,...) on tablets or the smartboard to practice their dialogues. 

   

   

   

   

- Put pupils into pairs to practise the exchanges. Go around the classroom to offer support.

- Invite some pairs to the front to take turns acting out the exchanges.

- Pupils observe the picture and identify the context.

- Pupils speak into the AI voice-recognition tool ("Hi. How are you?") and receive automated AI responses ("Fine, thank you."), utilizing AI to check pronunciation and practice basic interactions.

Activity 4: Listen and number.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils greet each other, respond to each other's greetings with thanks, and say goodbye and number the correct pictures.

b. Organisation:

Activity 5: Read and match.

a. Objective: To read and match pairs of target sentence patterns.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils' attention to Sentence 1 and get them to read it in chorus. Draw attention to the line connecting 1 with b. Have pupils read Sentence b in chorus.

- Teacher projects an interactive "Drag and Drop" matching game from sachmem.net on the smart board and invites individual pupils to come to the smart board to perform the drag-and-drop actions.

- Extension: Invite pairs of pupils to stand up and read aloud the matched exchanges.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

- Pupils read the example (1-b) in chorus.



 

- Selected pupils come to the smart board, touch the screen, and drag the response boxes to drop them into the correct slots.

a. Objective: To practise using the target sentence patterns by playing the game Hello and goodbye.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the writing skills and the exact target structures (How are you? - Fine, thank you. and Goodbye.) through a sentence-building exercise.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher writes jumbled sentences on the board or distributes a small worksheet.

- Teacher explains the task: "Put the words in the correct order to make meaningful sentences."
