UNIT 2: OUR NAMES

Lesson 2 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about the character's age.
  • Correctly say the words and use "How old are you? - I’m ____ years old." to ask and answer questions about someone's age.
  • Enhance the correct use of the target structures and respond using their own ages in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about ages and number the correct pictures.
  • Complete three gapped dialogues with the help of picture cues.
  • Sing the song "How old are you?" with the correct pronunciation and melody.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create an engaging atmosphere, review numbers 1-6, and introduce numbers 7-10 for the new lesson.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher organizes a quick game called "Counting Catch". Teacher throws a soft ball to a pupil and says "One". The pupil catches the ball and says "Two", then throws it to another pupil who says "Three", continuing up to "Ten".

- Teacher writes the numbers 7, 8, 9, 10 on the board and points to them.

- Teacher introduces a simple voice-recognition AI (eg., Native Speech,...) on the smart screen that listens to the pupils' counting and displays the corresponding visual numbers, ensuring basic vocabulary reinforcement without cramming.

- Teacher asks pupils to open their books and introduces the new lesson: Unit 2, Lesson 2.

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it.

   

- Pupils play the game, catching the ball and counting the numbers out loud in order.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say

a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use How old are you? - I'm ___ years old. to ask and answer questions about someone's age.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at the pictures and elicit the numbers on the cakes.

- Teacher has pupils point at Picture a, listen to the recording from sachmem.net and repeat the word (seven). Repeat the same procedure with the other three pictures. Have the class repeat the numbers a few times.

- Teacher points at the first bubble and has pupils listen and repeat after the recording (How old are you?). Point at Picture a and have pupils listen and repeat after the recording (I'm seven years old.). Repeat the same procedure with the other three pictures.

- Teacher has pairs practise asking and answering the question How old are you? - I'm ___ years old.

   

- Teacher invites a few pairs to point at the pictures and say the questions and answers in front of the class.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

   

   

- Pupils look at the pictures and describe the numbers on the cakes.

Picture cues:

a. A girl is holding a birthday cake with the number 7.

- Pupils listen and repeat the words (seven, eight, nine, ten).



 

- Pupils point at the bubbles and pictures, listen, and repeat the full sentences.



 

   

- Pupils work in pairs to practice asking and answering.

- Pairs act out the exchanges in front of the class.

a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of How old are you? - I’m ___ years old. and to correctly respond using their own ages in a freer context.

Activity 4: Listen and number.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about ages and number the correct pictures.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at Activity 4. Ask them How many pictures are there? What can you see in each picture? Draw attention to the boxes. Check comprehension.

- Teacher plays the recording of the first dialogue. Tell pupils to listen to the age (e.g. eight) and number the pictures. Ask pupils which picture number eight appears (Picture b). Tell pupils to write “1” in the box of Picture b.

- Teacher accesses sachmem.net for pupils to tick the numbers directly and receive results immediately.

Activity 6: Let's sing.

a. Objective: To sing the song How old are you? with the correct pronunciation and melody.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils read the lyrics to familiarise themselves with the questions and answers. Check comprehension.

- Teacher screens an AI-synced animated lyric video from sachmem.net that automatically highlights keywords during the melody stream.

- Teacher has pupils listen to the whole song, drawing their attention to the pronunciation.

   

- Teacher plays the recording once or twice for pupils to listen and repeat, line after line and do related actions (e.g., clapping hands).

- When pupils feel confident, ask them to sing the whole song while doing actions.

- Teacher invites a few groups to the front of the class to sing the song.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To apply the structure "How old are you?" in a real-life context at home.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher assigns a fun homework task: "Age Interview".

- Teacher asks pupils to go home, ask 3 family members or friends the question: "How old are you?".

- Pupils write down the names and the ages of the 3 people in their notebooks.

   

- To make it interesting, teacher encourages pupils to draw a small, colorful birthday cake with the corresponding number next to each person's name.

- Teacher reminds pupils to bring their notebooks to the next class to share their drawings with their friends.

- Teacher sends a digital homework reference card onto the class communication channel (e.g., Zalo, VnEdu) to assist parents.
