UNIT 9: COLOURS
Lesson 1 (2 periods)
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge and skills
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on the colour of an eraser.
- Correctly say the words (blue, brown, red, yellow) and use "What colour is it? – It's ___." to ask and answer questions about the colour of a school thing.
- Enhance the correct use of "What colour is it? – It's ___." to ask and answer questions about the colour of a school thing in a freer context.
- Listen to and understand two communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about the colours of school things and tick the correct pictures.
- Complete the four gapped dialogues with the help of picture cues.
- Revise the target vocabulary items through the puzzle, then ask and answer questions about the colours of school things.

2. PRESENTATION Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat. a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on the colour of an eraser. b. Organisation: - Teacher has pupils look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters in the pictures.
- The teacher operates an interactive digital smartboard to display animated contexts and taps the digital bubbles on the screen to play the corresponding audio. - Teacher asks pupils to look at Picture a. Play the recording for them to listen. - Teacher plays the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation where necessary. Repeat the same procedure with Picture b. - Teacher invites a few pairs to the front of the class to listen to and repeat the sentences in the recording. - Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the question What colour is it? and the answer It's blue. Tell pupils that they are a question and an answer about the colour of the eraser. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils observe the pictures and identify Mary and Minh.
- Pupils listen to the audio to understand the context. - Pupils select simple digital technologies to interact by stepping up to the smartboard and tapping the screen to hear the dialogue.
- Pupils repeat the sentences, paying attention to pronunciation and intonation.
- Selected pairs perform the short dialogue at the front of the class.
- Pupils take note of the new target structure for asking about colours. * Audio script: a) Mary: Do you have an eraser? Minh: Yes, I do. b) Mary: What colour is it? Minh: It's blue. |

Activity 2: Listen, point and say. a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use What colour is it? – It's ___. to ask and answer questions about the colour of a school thing. b. Organisation: ………………………………………….. ………………………………………….. …………………………………………..

Activity 3: Let's talk. a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of What colour is it? – It's ___. to ask and answer questions about the colour of a school thing in a freer context. b. Organisation: - Teacher has pupils look at the school things on the desk and say the names and their colours.
- Teacher gives pupils time to practise in pairs. One pupil asks the question and the other gives the answer. Go around and offer help or correct pronunciation where necessary. - Teacher encourages pupils to point at the school things in the classroom and to practise asking and answering questions about their colours. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils identify the items on the illustrated desk and their colours. * Context: a blue pen, a red pencil, a yellow ruler and a brown eraser.
- Pupils listen to the teacher's model.
- Pupils work in pairs to point, ask, and answer based on the picture.

Activity 5: Look, complete and read. a. Objective: To complete the four gapped dialogues with the help of picture cues. b. Organisation: - Teacher has pupils look at the pictures and identify the things and their colours.
- Teacher has pupils look at the four incomplete dialogues. Draw their attention to the missing words. - Teacher models Picture 1. Have pupils look at the dialogue. Ask them what is missing (yellow). Have them complete the gap (It's yellow.). - Teacher repeats the same procedure with Pictures 2, 3 and 4, or allows pupils to work individually. - Teacher has pupils complete the dialogues individually and asks a few pairs to read them aloud. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils observe the items (yellow ruler, red pencil case, brown school bag, blue pen).
- Pupils identify the missing grammatical components.
- Pupils write the lightweight, focused target words into the blanks independently.

3. PRACTICE a. Objective: To consolidate reading comprehension of the 4 target colours and the sentence structure visually, without relying on Vietnamese translation. b. Organisation: Mission 1: Look and Write - Teacher hands out a lightweight, highly visual worksheet. - Teacher gives the English instruction clearly: Look and Write - The worksheet features 4 drawings of school items.
- Teacher goes around to monitor and praise pupils for accuracy and neatness. - Teacher checks answers as a class. Mission 2: Complete the quiz (optional). - Teacher sends link the quiz on website kenhhoctap: https://kenhhoctap.edu.vn/bai-tap/quiz-global-success-3-textbook-unit-9-colours-25086 for student to perform. - Teacher gives pupils 5 minutes to choose the correct answer. - Teacher calls out pupils to share their answers and explain the correct ones. - Teacher monitors and offers support. - Teacher asks fast finishers to read the completed words aloud to their partners. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
