UNIT 3: OUR FRIENDS

Lesson 2 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone.
  • Correctly say the words and use "Is this / that ___?" and "Yes, it is. / No, it isn't. It's ___." to ask and answer questions about the characters.
  • Enhance the correct use of asking and answering questions about someone in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about someone and number the correct pictures.
  • Complete four target sentence patterns in four dialogues with the help of picture cues.
  • Recognise target words while looking at pictures of the characters and circle six names in a letter table, then use them to ask and answer questions.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters in the pictures.

- Teacher uses a digital textbook platform (sachmem.net), clicking on the characters to trigger the audio playback, demonstrating how to access digital content.

- Teacher asks pupils to look at Picture a. Play the recording for them to listen.

- Teacher plays the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation where necessary. Repeat the same procedure with Picture b.

- Teacher invites a few pairs to the front of the classroom to listen to and repeat the sentences in the recording.

- Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the question Is this Bill? and the answer Yes, it is. and the question Is that Nam? and the answer No, it isn't. It's Minh. Tell pupils that they are the questions and answers about Bill and Minh.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

   

   

   

- Pupils look at Pictures a and b and identify Mai, Nam, Mary, and Minh.

   

   

   

  

 

   

- Pupils use their tablets to tap the digital characters, accessing the audio files to listen and repeat.

   

- Pupils listen to the recording.

- Pupils listen and repeat sentence by sentence (chorus and individually).



 

   

- Selected pairs perform in front of the class.

Activity 3: Let’s talk.

a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of Is this / that ______? and Yes, it is. / No, it isn't. It's ______. to ask and answer questions about someone in a freer context.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the picture (Bill and Mai are in the park. Bill asks Mai about Linh and Nam). Ask questions to help them identify the context.

- Teacher elicits the missing words in the speech bubbles and writes them on the board. Get pupils to say the completed sentences. Correct pronunciation.

- Teacher opens a simple AI voice recognition app (eg., Native Speech,...) on the tablet to check pupils' pronunciation of the completed sentences.

   

- Teacher puts pupils into pairs and encourages them to ask and answer questions about the characters Linh and Nam. Go around to offer support.

- Teacher invites some groups to the front of the class to perform their conversations.

- Pupils look at the picture and identify the context.

Picture cue: Bill and Mai are in the park. Bill asks Mai about Linh and Nam.



 

   

   

- Pupils find the missing words to complete the speech bubbles. Say the sentences out loud.

- Pupils speak the sentences into the tablet's microphone to let the AI app recognize their voices and display the text.

- Pupils work in pairs to ask and answer about Linh and Nam.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about someone and number the correct pictures.

Activity 5: Look, complete and read.

a. Objective: To complete four target sentence patterns in four dialogues with the help of picture cues.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at the pictures and identify the characters.

- Teacher has pupils look at the four incomplete dialogues. Draw their attention to the missing words.

- Teacher models Picture 1: Ask pupils what words are missing (Is this) and use the on-screen digital keyboard to type the missing words (Is this) from sachmem.net.

Then have them complete the gap (Is this Ben? Yes, it is.). Repeat with Pictures 2, 3 and 4.

- Teacher has pupils complete the dialogues individually, then nominate a few pairs to read them aloud.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

- Pupils look at the pictures and identify characters.


 

   

   

- Pupils identify the missing parts in the sentences.

   

- Pupils follow the teacher's model, observing how to use an on-screen keyboard.

a. Objective: To consolidate the target sentence patterns focusing on reading comprehension and writing skills through structured, independent exercises.

b. Organisation: 

Mission 1: "Mini Worksheet" (Read, Match and Complete)

- Teacher hands out a "Mini Worksheet" to each pupil.

- Teacher explains the 2 parts of the worksheet clearly:

Part 1: Read and match 

Teacher asks pupils to draw a line to match the question in column A with the correct answer in column B.

Part 2: Look and complete

Teacher tells pupils to use the words in the box to fill in the blanks.
