UNIT 2: OUR NAMES

Lesson 1 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about names.
  • Correctly say the characters’ names and use What’s your name? – My name’s ____. to ask and answer questions about names.
  • Enhance the correct use of What’s your name? and My name’s ____. to ask and answer questions about names in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand two communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about their names and tick the correct pictures.
  • Complete the target sentence patterns in two exchanges with the help of picture cues.
  • Review the characters’ names by playing the game Slap the board.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about names.

b. Organisation:

- Ask pupils to look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters in the pictures.

- Ask pupils to look at Picture a. Play the recording from sachmem.net for them to listen.

- Play the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation where necessary. Repeat the same procedure with Picture b.

- Invite a few pairs to the front of the classroom to listen to and repeat the sentences in the recording.

- Draw pupils’ attention to the question What’s your name? and the answers My name’s Ben and My name’s Mary. Tell pupils that they are a question and answers about the characters’ names.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say.

a. Objective: To correctly say the characters’ names and use What’s your name? – My name’s ____. to ask and answer questions about names.

Activity 3: Let’s talk.

a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of What’s your name? and My name’s ____. to ask and answer questions about names in a freer context.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils’ attention to the two speech bubbles. Read the question aloud and ask pupils to repeat. Elicit the answer My name’s Mai for the second bubble. Get pupils to repeat several times in pairs.

   

   

- Go around the classroom, pointing to pupils and asking What’s your name? Allow each pupil to answer with his/her own name.

- Guide students to use a simple voice recording app on a tablet/smartphone to create a digital audio record of their short conversation.

   

   

- Turn on the recordings in front of the class for pupils to listen and assess.

- Preparation for the project: Ask pupils to prepare for the project on page 21 by making paper birthday cakes or drawing birthday cakes (with numbers showing their ages) as homework so that they can tell the class about their names and ages at Project time.

- Pupils look at the bubbles, repeat the question, and provide the answer. Practise the exchange in pairs.

Activity 5: Look, complete and read.

a. Objective: To complete the target sentence patterns in two exchanges with the help of picture cues.

b. Organisation:

- Ask pupils to look at the pictures and identify the characters.

- Ask pupils to look at the two incomplete exchanges. Draw their attention to the missing words.

- Model Picture 1. Have pupils look at the dialogue. Ask them what is missing in the answer (a name). Identify the character (Lucy) and complete the gap. Repeat the procedure with Picture 2.

- Teacher projects an interactive digital worksheet from sachmem.net onto the smart board and selects digital text-entry tools to demonstrate how to complete the activity.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the spelling and writing of the target structures (What's your name? / My name's...) through a written exercise.

- Teacher prepares a short handout (or writes on the board) containing two simple written tasks.

- Teacher explains the requirements clearly and models one example for each task.

- Give pupils 4 - 5 minutes to complete the exercises individually in their notebooks or on the handouts.

- Teacher goes around the classroom to observe, check their writing, and offer help to weaker pupils.

- After the time is up, teacher calls some pupils to the board to write their answers.

- Teacher checks with the whole class, gives the correct keys, and reminds pupils about capitalization and punctuation (e.g., capital letters at the beginning of sentences and for names, question marks at the end of questions).

Mission 2: Complete the quiz (optional).

- Teacher sends link the quiz on website  kenhhoctap for student to perform.

- Teacher gives pupils 5 minutes to choose the correct answer.

- Teacher calls out pupils to share their answers and explain the correct ones.
