UNIT 1: MY FRIENDS
Lesson 2 (2 periods)
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge and skills
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about where someone is from.
- Correctly say the words and use Where's he / she from? – He's / She's from ____. to ask and answer questions about where someone is from.
- Enhance the correct use of Where's he / she from? – He's / She's from ____. to ask and answer questions in a freer context.
- Listen to and understand two communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about where someone comes from and tick the correct pictures.
- Complete four gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.
- Revise the target vocabulary items through the game Find someone who is from ...

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP a. Objective: To create an engaging and energetic atmosphere, drawing pupils' attention to the topic of countries and flags before starting the main lesson. b. Organisation: - Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video. - Teacher organizes a game called "Mystery Flag Box". - Teacher prepares a small box containing flashcards of flags learned in Lesson 1 (Vietnam, America, Britain, Australia) and the new ones for Lesson 2 (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan).
- Teacher plays an English song. Pupils pass the box around the class. - When the music stops, the pupil holding the box draws a flag, shows it to the class, and says aloud the name of the country. - Teacher praises pupils and introduces the new lesson: Unit 1, Lesson 2. |
- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it.
- Pupils listen to the instructions.
- Pupils pass the box around while the music plays. - The pupil holding the box picks a flag and says the country's name loudly (e.g., "Vietnam!", "America!"). - Pupils listen to the teacher's introduction.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use Where's he / she from? – He's / She's from ____. to ask and answer questions about where someone is from. b. Organisation: - Teacher displays 4 pictures cues (a, b, c, d) on screen.
- Teacher asks pupils to look at Picture a and identify the boy, the flag and the name of the country. Play the recording from youtube.com for pupils to listen to and repeat the word under the picture in chorus and individually until they feel confident. - Teacher draws pupils' attention to the speech bubbles and elicit the missing words. Play the recording for pupils to repeat the sentences in both bubbles a few times. Remind pupils to point at the relevant picture when they are repeating. - Teacher repeats Steps 1 and 2 with Pictures b, c and d. Go around the classroom and offer help where necessary.
- Teacher invites a few pairs to act out the exchanges in front of the class. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

Activity 4: Listen and tick. a. Objective: To listen to and understand two communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about where someone comes from and tick the correct pictures. b. Organisation: - Teacher asks pupils to look at Pictures 1a and 1b and identify the characters. Ask Who's he? and Where's he from? Draw their attention to the flags. Check comprehension.
- Teacher sets up a simple digital listening task on the tablets and plays the recording from youtube.com of the first dialogue for pupils to listen and tick the correct box. Play the recording again for pupils to check their answers. - Teacher repeats Steps 1 and 2 with Pictures 2a and 2b. - Teacher gets pupils to swap their books with a partner and check their answers before checking as a class. Correct the answers if necessary. Extension: If time allows, play the recording, sentence by sentence, for the class to listen and repeat. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

Activity 6: Let's play. a. Objective: To revise the target vocabulary items through the game Find someone who is from ... b. Organisation: - Teacher tells pupils they are going to revise the target vocabulary. Explain how the game is played. Check comprehension. - Teacher divides pupils into groups of six and gives each group a set of five flashcards (e.g., Australia, Thailand, Japan, Britain, Malaysia).
- One player points to the other players and asks Where are you from? The other players take turns looking at their flashcards and answering (e.g., I'm from Britain.). If the answer is correct, they get a point. If it does not match the card, they are out. - The game ends when all the flashcards are gone. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
