UNIT 8: MY FAVOURITE SUBJECTS
Lesson 1 (2 periods)
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge and skills
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about someone’s favourite subject.
- Correctly say the words and use What’s your favourite subject? – It’s ____. to ask and answer questions about someone’s favourite subject.
- Enhance the correct use of What’s your favourite subject? – It’s ____. to ask and answer questions about someone’s favourite subject in a freer context.
- Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about their favourite subjects and tick or cross the pictures.
- Complete four exchanges about characters’ favourite subjects with the help of picture cues.
- Sing the song My favourite subject with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say. a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use What’s your favourite subject? – It’s ____. to ask and answer questions about someone’s favourite subject. b. Organisation: - Teacher has pupils look at the pictures. Elicit the subjects from pupils.
- Teacher has pupils point at Picture a (art), listen to the recording from youtube and repeat. Repeat the same procedure with Pictures b, c and d. Have the class point at the pictures and repeat the subjects a few times. - Teacher points at the first bubble and has pupils listen to and repeat after the recording (What’s your favourite subject?). Point at Picture a and have pupils listen to and repeat after the recording (It’s art.). Repeat the same procedure with Pictures b, c and d. - Teacher sets a time limit for pupils to work in pairs to practise asking and answering the question What’s your favourite subject? – It’s ____. Go around the class and offer help where necessary. - Teacher guides pupils to use a basic AI pronunciation feedback app (eg., Native Speech,...) on their tablets to assess their pronunciation. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils look at the pictures and identify the subjects. Picture cues: a. a girl painting b. a girl singing c. a group of pupils doing physical exercise d. a boy working on the computer - Pupils point at the pictures, listen, and repeat the vocabulary words (art, music, PE, IT). - Pupils listen and repeat the full questions and answers for each picture cue.
- Pupils work in pairs to practise asking and answering the question.
- Pupils speak into the tablet microphone, using the AI pronunciation tool to check their spoken answers for the target structures. Audio script: a. Boy: What's your favourite subject? Activity 4: Listen and tick or cross. a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about their favourite subjects and tick or cross the pictures. b. Organisation: - Teacher draws pupils’ attention to the pictures in Activity 4 and asks them to identify the subjects on the book covers.
- Teacher uses a basic online quizzing tool (eg., Kahoot, Wordwall,...) to present the listening task, allowing students to input their answers digitally. - Teacher plays the recording from youtube of the first dialogue and tells pupils to tick or cross the picture. Play the recording again for them to check their answers. - Teacher repeats Step 2 with the rest of dialogues. - Teacher sets a time limit for pupils to swap books with a partner and check their answers before checking as a class. - Extension: If time allows, play the recording, sentence by sentence, for the class to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation where necessary. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

- Pupils access to the online quizzing tool.

Activity 6: Let’s sing. a. Objective: To sing the song My favourite subject with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody. b. Organisation: - Teacher has pupils read the song to familiarise themselves with the lyrics. Check comprehension and give feedback. - Teacher has pupils listen to the whole song, drawing their attention to the pronunciation and tune. - Teacher plays the recording from youtube of the song, line by line, for pupils to listen and repeat and do related actions, e.g. using a finger to trace the words or clapping their hands. - When pupils feel confident and are familiar with the melody, ask them to sing the whole song while doing actions or clapping their hands. - Teacher invites a few groups to the front of the class to sing the song. The class may sing along to reinforce the activity. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

Under the picture, write two simple sentences: Hello, my name is ______. My favourite subject is ______." - Teacher tells pupils they will bring their posters to the next class and present them to their friends. * CONSOLIDATION: - Teacher reviews the main vocabulary (art, music, PE, IT) and the structure What's your favourite subject? - It's.... - Teacher praises the class for their effort. * ADVICE - Review the vocabulary and sentence structures learned today. - Complete the "My Favourite Subject Poster" task at home. - Prepare for Unit 8 - Lesson 2. |
