UNIT 4: MY BIRTHDAY PARTY

Lesson 1 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about birthdays. 
  • Correctly say the words and use "When's your birthday? - It's in ____." to ask and answer questions about someone's birthday. 
  • Use the structure "When's your birthday? - It's in ____." in a freer context. 
  • Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about their birthdays and number the correct pictures. 
  • Complete four gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues. 
  • Sing the song "When's your birthday?" with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create a fun and engaging atmosphere and introduce the topic of the lesson.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Game "The Birthday Train": Teacher plays a short, lively "Months of the Year" song. Teacher calls 5 pupils to the front, each holding a flashcard of a month (January, February, March, April, May) randomly.

- Teacher asks the class to help the "train" line up in the correct order from January to May.

   

- Teacher points to each card and has the whole class read the month aloud to warm up their pronunciation.

- Teacher asks: "Do you like birthday parties?" to lead into the new lesson.

- Teacher asks pupils to open their books at Unit 4, Lesson 1.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say.

a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use When's your birthday? - It's in ____. to ask and answer questions about someone's birthday.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher has pupils look at the pictures of calendars on the smart TV and elicit the names of the months. Have the class repeat the words a few times.

- Teacher models the pronunciation using an AI Speech Recognition tool (e.g., Google Read Along or similar educational AI app) displayed on the screen, asks pupils point at Picture a, listen to the recording from youtube and repeat the word (January).

- Teacher has pupils repeat the same procedure with the other three pictures.

- Teacher points at the bubbles and has pupils listen to and repeat after the recording (When's your birthday? - It's in January.). Point at Picture a and have pupils listen to and repeat the sentences until they feel confident. Repeat the same procedure with Pictures b, c, and d.

- Teacher has pupils work in pairs and practise asking and answering the question When's your birthday? - It's in ____. using the speech bubbles and the pictures.

- Teacher invites a few pairs to point at the pictures and say the questions and answers in front of the class.

Activity 4: Listen and number.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about their birthdays and number the correct pictures.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher draws pupils' attention to the pictures. Elicit the name of the month in each picture.

- Teacher plays the recording from youtube all the way through so that pupils can become familiar with the characters' voices. Then play the recording again for them to listen and number the pictures. Play the recording a third time to give pupils another listening opportunity.

- Teacher checks answers as a class. Play the recording again for pupils to double-check their answers.

- Teacher praises good pronunciation and intonation.

a. Objective: To sing the song When's your birthday? with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher draws pupils' attention to the title and lyrics of the song. Encourage them to point at the pictures to reinforce their understanding.

- Teacher plays the recording from youtube all the way through. Encourage them to listen carefully to the pronunciation and melody.

- Teacher plays the recording line by line for pupils to listen and repeat. Correct their pronunciation where necessary.

- Teacher plays the recording all the way through and has pupils sing along.

- Teacher puts pupils into groups to make up their own actions for the song. Invite groups to the front of the class to perform.

a. Objective: To apply the learned language to a highly visual, creative at-home task and prepare for the end-of-unit project.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher sets an exciting take-home mission: "My Creative Birthday Invitation".

- Teacher gives instructions: "At home, with your parents' help, go to a safe educational AI drawing tool (like AutoDraw). Start sketching a basic cake, and watch how the AI suggests beautiful cake images. Pick your favorite, print it, or use it as inspiration to draw your own cake on colored paper. Write: 'My birthday is in [Your Month]' clearly on the card."

- Teacher explains that this task connects with the Project on page 33.

- Remind pupils to bring their cards to the next class to show to their friends and present them.

* CONSOLIDATION

- Teacher reviews and summarizes the main points of the lesson (Asking and answering about birthdays: When's your birthday? - It's in + Month).

- Teacher comments on and evaluates pupils' participation.

* ADVICE

- Review the vocabulary (January to May) and sentence structures learned today.
