UNIT 10: OUR SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Lesson 3 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Correctly repeat the sounds of the letters ere in isolation, in the word were (/ə/) and the word where (/eə/).
  • Identify the target words where and were while listening.
  • Say the chant with the correct rhythm and pronunciation.
  • Read two texts and complete the sentences about Mai’s and Tony’s summer holidays.
  • Read and complete a gapped paragraph about where someone was on holiday in the previous summer.
  • Make a mind map of where they were on holiday in the previous summer and use the notes to make a presentation.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create an engaging atmosphere, activate prior knowledge about summer holiday vocabulary, and lead into the lesson naturally.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Game: "Pass the Summer Ball": Teacher brings a soft ball to class. Play an AI-generated upbeat song using a smart TV.

   

- Explain the rules: Play an upbeat song. Pupils pass the ball around the class. When the music stops, the pupil holding the ball stands up and answers the teacher's question: "Where were you last summer?" (e.g., I was in Ha Long Bay / on the beach).

- Do this for 4-5 rounds. Praise and give stickers to pupils who answer correctly.

- Teacher leads into the new lesson: "Today, we will learn more about how to pronounce and talk about our summer holidays in Lesson 3."

   

   

   

   

   

   

- Pupils greet the teacher.

- Students watch the AI-generated video and answer the questions about it.

   

- Pupils listen to the rules and participate in passing the ball, interacting with the AI-generated music played from the smart TV.

Activity 1: Listen and repeat.

a. Objective: To correctly repeat the sounds of letters ere in isolation, in the word were (/ə/) as in the sentence Were you on the beach last summer? and the word where (/eə/) as in Where were you last weekend?

Activity 2: Listen and circle.

a. Objective: To identify the target words where and were while listening.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils the goal of the activity. Explain that they have to listen to the recording and circle the correct options. Check comprehension.

- Play the recording from youtube for pupils to listen. Play the recording again for them to listen and circle the correct options.

- Tell pupils to swap books with a partner, then check the answers together as a class. Write the correct answers on the board.

- Play the recording again for pupils to double-check their answers.

   

- Extension: Invite one or two pupils to stand up, listen to and repeat the sentences.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

- Pupils listen to the teacher's instructions.



 

- Pupils listen to the audio and circle the correct options (a, b, or c).

   

- Pupils swap books to peer-check.

a. Objective: To say the chant with the correct rhythm and pronunciation.

Activity 4: Read and complete.

a. Objective: To read two texts and complete the sentences about Mai's and Tony's summer holidays.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils' attention to the four incomplete sentences below the texts. Display the reading texts clearly on the smartboard. Elicit the answers to Sentence 1 (about a place), Sentence 2 (about Ha Long Bay), Sentence 3 (about the people in London), and Sentence 4 (about Mai's and Tony's feelings about their summer holidays).

- Have pupils read the texts to find the information and complete the four sentences.

- Set a time limit for pupils to do the task individually. Go around the classroom and offer help where necessary.

- Get pupils to compare their answers with a partner, then check answers together as a class.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

   

- Pupils look at the incomplete sentences and determine the type of missing information displayed on the smartboard.

Activity 6: Project

a. Objective: To make a mind map of where pupils were on holiday in the previous summer and use the notes to make a presentation to the class.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils about the goal of the activity, explaining that they have to look at the notes in their mind maps and present the results to the class.

- Have pupils work in groups of five, where each pupil uses their mind map to tell the group about where they were on holiday in the previous summer and describes the place.

- Invite a few pupils to look at their mind map notes and tell the class about them, for example: Last summer, I was on holiday in Bangkok. The food was excellent....

- Have the rest of the class give comments and praise pupils if they perform well.

- Pupils work in groups of 5. Fill out their basic mind maps and take turns sharing within the group.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To apply the target language in a real-life family context, encouraging simple conversation between the child and parents.

b. Organisation:

Task: "Little Reporter - Family Interview"

- Teacher assigns the task: “Little Reporter”

- Instructions: At home, act as a reporter. Ask your mom, dad, or sibling about their past summer holiday to practice mother-child or parent-child dialogues.

- Instruct pupils to use a basic voice recorder on a smartphone to record the conversation.

   

- Pupil asks: "Where were you last summer, Mom/Dad?"

- Parent answers: "I was in/on..."

- Pupils write down 3 basic sentences about their family member's holiday based on the recording. Tell them to keep the sentences very simple.

Example:

1. Last summer, my mom was in Da Nang.

2. The beach was beautiful.

3. The food was great.

- Teacher invites 2-3 pupils to report their findings at the beginning of the next lesson.

* CONSOLIDATION

- Teacher reviews and summarizes the main points of the lesson.

- Teacher comments on and evaluates pupils' participation.

- Review the vocabulary, the chant, and sentence structures learned today.

- Complete the "Family Interview" task at home.
