UNIT 11: MY HOME

Lesson 2 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about what a place is like.
  • Correctly say the phrases and use "What’s the _____ like? – It’s _____." to ask and answer questions about what a place is like.
  • Enhance the correct use of "What’s the _____ like? – It’s _____." to ask and answer questions about what a place is like in a freer context.
  • Listen to and understand two communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about what a place is like and tick the correct pictures.
  • Complete two gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.
  • Sing the song My house with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create an engaging atmosphere and review previous vocabulary (places) to lead into the new lesson.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Game: "Mystery Picture".

- Teacher divides the class into 2 teams.

- Teacher slowly reveals pictures of places (a street, a city, a road, a village) piece by piece on the screen.

- The first team to raise their hand and correctly guess the English word for the place gets a point.

- Teacher asks pupils to open their books at page 8 and look at Unit 11, Lesson 2. Tell pupils what they will learn in this lesson.

Activity 2: Listen, point and say.

a. Objective: To correctly say the phrases and use What's the ____ like? – It's ____. to ask and answer questions about what a place is like.

b. Organisation:

- Ask pupils to look at Pictures a, b, c and d and identify the places in the pictures. Have pupils describe what they can see in each picture.

- Play the recording from youtube for pupils to listen to and repeat the phrases in chorus and individually until they feel confident. Use the flash cards and interactive digital cards from sachmem.net on the smartboard for a busy street, a quiet village, a noisy road and a big city to practise the phrases.

- Draw pupils' attention to the speech bubbles and elicit the missing words and phrases in the question and answer by pointing at Picture a. Play the recording for pupils to listen to and repeat the sentences in both bubbles a few times. Repeat Step 3 with Pictures b, c and d.

- Let pupils point at the pictures and say the sentences in pairs. Go around the classroom to offer help if necessary.

- Extension: Invite a few pairs to act out the exchanges in front of the class.- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Activity 4: Listen and tick.

a. Objective: The goal is to listen to and understand two communicative contexts where characters ask and answer questions about what a place is like, and to tick the correct pictures.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils' attention to the pictures and ask questions to elicit words and phrases to describe them, reminding them to look at each pair of pictures to compare.

- Play the recording from sachmem.net for pupils to listen, then play it again for them to choose the places the speakers are talking about using a digital classroom response system (e.g., Quizizz or a smart voting tool) and finally play it a third time to check and complete the activity.

- Get pupils to swap books with a partner to check answers before checking as a class, correcting them if necessary.

Extension: If time allows, play the recording sentence by sentence for pupils to listen and repeat individually or in chorus, correcting pronunciation where necessary.

Activity 6: Let's sing.

a. Objective: To sing the song My house with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils' attention to the title and the lyrics of the song. Encourage them to point at the places in the pictures to reinforce their understanding.

- Have pupils read the first verse of the lyrics. Explain that the first verse is about a house in a town. Have pupils listen to the first verse from sachmem.net, drawing their attention to the pronunciation, rhythm and melody. Then let them listen to and practise singing it, line by line, while making gestures for small, quiet and big.

- Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the second verse. Explain that it is about a house in a city. Check comprehension and give feedback.

- Ask pupils to listen to and sing the whole song while making gestures. Go around the classroom and offer help if necessary.

- Invite a few groups to the front of the class to sing the song. The class may sing along and clap to reinforce the activity.

Mission: "My Neighborhood Art" (Home Project)

- Teacher assigns a home task: "Draw and Describe".

- Task instructions: At home, pupils will draw a simple picture of where they live (a street, a village, or a city) using a basic AI drawing tool like AutoDraw. Below the picture, they must type 2 simple sentences to describe it using the structure:

"I live in a ________."

"It's a ________ ________."

(Example: I live in a street. It's a quiet street.)

- Teacher tells pupils they will show their drawings and read their sentences to the class in the next lesson.

* CONSOLIDATION

- Teacher reviews and summarizes the main points of the lesson (vocabulary: busy street, quiet village, noisy road, big city & structure: What's the... like?).
