UNIT 8: MY FAVOURITE SUBJECTS
Lesson 2 (2 periods)
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge and skills
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking for and giving reasons for liking a school subject, English.
- Correctly say the words and phrases and use "Why do you like ______? – Because I want to be ______." to ask for and give reasons for liking a school subject.
- Listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils give reasons why they like the school subject and number the correct pictures.
- Complete two dialogues about characters' favourite subjects and the reasons why they like them with the help of picture cues.
- Practise making meaningful and grammatically correct sentences about future jobs by playing the game Sentence making.

2. PRESENTATION Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat. a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking for and giving reasons for liking a school subject, English. b. Organisation: - Teacher asks pupils to look at Pictures a and b. Identify the characters (Mary and Nam) and the reason why Nam likes English.
- Teacher plays the recording from youtube for Picture a. Have pupils listen. - Teacher instructs pupils to use an AI pronunciation checker app (eg., Native Speech,..) on their tablets. Teacher plays the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat individually and in chorus.
- Teacher corrects pronunciation where necessary. Repeat the procedure with Picture b. - Teacher invites a few pairs to stand up to listen and repeat the sentences. - Teacher draws attention to the target structure: "Why do you like English? - Because I want to be an English teacher." - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils look at the pictures and identify characters and contexts.
- Pupils listen to the recording.
- Pupils interact with the AI speech recognition app on their tablets to listen, point, and repeat sentence by sentence. Pupils pay attention to the AI feedback on their pronunciation. - Pairs stand up and repeat the exchanges.
- Pupils note down the target question and answer structures. Context a: Mary: What's your favourite subject, Nam? Nam: It's English. Context b: Mary: Why do you like English? Nam: Because I want to be an English teacher. |

Activity 3: Let’s talk. a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of Why do you like ____? – Because I want to be ____. to ask for and give reasons for liking a school subject in a freer context. b. Organisation: - Teacher asks pupils to look at the picture (four pupils in the playground holding textbooks). Get pupils to identify the first girl's favourite subject (music) and what she wants to be (singer).
- Teacher divides the class into two groups to role-play the girl and an interviewer. - Teacher sets a time limit for pairs to practise asking and answering "Why do you like ___? - Because I want to be ___." - Teacher sets up a simple online collaborative space (e.g., Padlet) and instructs pairs to record a basic audio clip of their dialogue using their tablets. Go around the classroom to observe and offer help where necessary. - Teacher uses the smartboard to play the recordings from the online collaborative space in front of the class. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

Activity 5: Look, complete and read. a. Objective: To complete two dialogues about characters' favourite subjects and the reasons why they like them with the help of picture cues. b. Organisation: - Teacher asks pupils to look at Picture 1. Ask what they are doing. Elicit missing words for Exchange 1 (Why, painter). Repeat with Picture 2.
- Teacher sets a time limit for pupils to do the task individually. - Teacher guides pupils to use an embedded basic AI hint feature if they get stuck.
- Teacher gets pupils to swap books and check answers. Check as a class. - Extension: Invite a few pairs to read the dialogues aloud. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils look at the pictures and guess the missing words based on context.

3. PRACTICE a. Objective: To consolidate vocabulary and grammar structures learned in the lesson through exercises. b. Organisation: Mission 1: "Grammar Detective" - Teacher distributes a printed handout containing two tasks to each pupil (or writes the tasks on the board). - Teacher clearly explains the instructions for Task A (Reorder the words) and Task B (Read and complete). - Teacher sets a time limit (about 5-7 minutes) for pupils to complete the mission individually in silence to improve concentration. - Teacher goes around the class to observe, monitor, and provide help to weaker pupils if necessary. - After the time is up, teacher invites some pupils to the board to write their answers or stand up and read them aloud. - Teacher checks with the whole class, corrects mistakes on the board, and explains the grammar points again if needed. Mission 2: Complete the quiz (optional). - Teacher sends link the quiz on website kenhhoctap for student to perform. - Teacher gives pupils 5 minutes to choose the correct answer. - Teacher calls out pupils to share their answers and explain the correct ones. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils receive the handout from the teacher or look at the board. - Pupils listen to the instructions carefully to understand how to do Task A and Task B. - Pupils work independently and quietly to complete the exercises within the time limit. - Pupils raise their hands to ask the teacher if they do not understand a word. - Selected pupils go to the board to write their sentences or stand up to share their answers with the class. - Pupils observe the correct answers on the board, check their own handouts, and use a red pen to correct any mistakes they made.
