UNIT 9: OUR SPORTS DAY
Lesson 3 (2 periods)
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge and skills
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Correctly repeat the sounds of the letter y in isolation, in the word February (/i/) as in the sentence Our sports day is in February, and the word July (/aɪ/) as in My birthday is in July.
- Identify the target words July and January while listening.
- Say the chant with the correct rhythm and pronunciation.
- Read a text about a sports day and decide whether statements are true or false.
- Read, understand and complete the gapped text about a sports day.
- Make a sports day poster and present it to the class using the target language.

- Critical thinking and creativity: Learn how to read and deduce information (True/False) and creatively design a poster.
- Communication and collaboration: Work in pairs and groups to complete the learning tasks, chant together, and present projects.

2. PRESENTATION Activity 1: Listen and repeat. a. Objective: To correctly repeat the sounds of letter y in isolation, in the word February (/i/) as in the sentence Our sports day is in February, and the word July (/aɪ/) as in My birthday is in July. b. Organisation: - Draw pupils' attention to the letter y, the word February and the sentence Our sports day is in February. Play the recording from youtube and encourage them to point at the letters / word / sentence while listening. - Play the recording again and encourage pupils to listen and repeat. Do this several times until pupils feel confident. Correct their pronunciation where necessary and praise them when their pronunciation is good. - Repeat for the letter y in the second line. - Let pupils work in pairs or groups to pronounce the sounds of the letter y, say the words February and July, and read the sentences Our sports day is in February. and My birthday is in July. Invite a few pupils to listen to the recording and say the language in front of the class. If they perform well, praise them. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
- Pupils look at the book, paying attention to the letter, words, and sentences. - Pupils listen to the audio and point at the book.
- Pupils listen and repeat several times to get familiar with the sounds /i/ and /aɪ/.
- Pupils practice pronunciation in pairs.

Activity 3: Let’s chant. a. Objective: To say the chant with the correct rhythm and pronunciation. b. Organisation: - Draw the pupils' attention to the lyrics of the chant and check their comprehension. - Play the recording from youtube all the way through, encouraging pupils to listen carefully to the rhythm and pronunciation. Additionally, draw the pupils' attention to the sounds of the letter y in the words January, February, and July within the chant. - Play the recording line by line for the pupils to listen and repeat, correcting their pronunciation when necessary. - Play the recording all the way through for the pupils to chant along, and encourage them to clap while chanting. - Extension: Divide the class into two or more groups to take turns listening to and repeating the chant, while the rest of the class claps along. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

Activity 5: Let’s write. a. Objective: To read, understand and complete the gapped text about a sports day. b. Organisation: - Inform the class about the goal of the activity, which is to read the gapped text and fill in the gaps, and check their comprehension. - Write the first gapped sentence, "Our school sports day is in ____", on the board and read it as a class. When reaching the gap, point to it, encourage pupils to say the answer, and provide them time to write it down. - Repeat for the remaining gapped sentences. - If there is time, invite a few pupils to read their completed sentences in front of the class, where the class will observe and praise their work. - Teacher moves on to the next content. |

Organisation: Mission 1: Read and Write - Teacher hands out a practice worksheet containing two basic tasks: a matching exercise and a fill-in-the-blank exercise with a word bank. Task 1: Read and match. 1. Our sports day is a. football. 2. The boys play b. in October. 3. I like c. January. 4. The girls play d. badminton. Task 2: Read and fill in the blanks. Word bank: [July/basketball/ playground] 1. We play games in the school _______. 2. My birthday is in ________. 3. They play ________. - Teacher gives pupils 4-5 minutes to complete the tasks independently.
- Teacher asks pupils to swap their worksheets with a partner for peer correction. - Teacher calls on a few pupils to read their answers aloud and writes the correct keys on the board.
Mission 2: Complete the quiz (optional). - Teacher sends link the quiz on website kenhhoctap for student to perform. - Teacher gives pupils 5 minutes to choose the correct answer. - Teacher calls out pupils to share their answers and explain the correct ones - Teacher moves on to the next content. |
