UNIT 4: MY BIRTHDAY PARTY

Lesson 3 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Correctly repeat the sounds of the letters j and w in isolation, in the words jam and water, and in the sentences I like jam. and I want some water.
  • Identify the target words jam and water while listening.
  • Say the chant with the correct pronunciation and rhythm.
  • Read and understand a text (Bill’s letter) and circle the correct answers.
  • Complete a gapped text using their personal information.
  • Make birthday party invitations at home and present them to the class by using the target language.

2. Competences

  • Critical thinking and creativity: learn how to extract information from a reading text and apply personal information to complete writing tasks.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs and groups to complete the learning tasks, chants, and project presentations.

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create a fun atmosphere, review food and drink vocabulary from previous lessons, and gently introduce the topic of birthday parties.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher prepares an interactive digital spinner (eg., Wheel of names...) displayed on the smart TV, containing pictures of basic food and drinks.

- Teacher selects pupil taps the smart TV to spin the digital wheel. When it stops, the pupil looks at the picture and says the basic sentence: "I want some [food/drink]."

Activity 2. Listen and circle.

a. Objective: To identify the target words jam and water while listening.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils’ attention to the incomplete sentences and three answer options. Explain what pupils have to do. Check comprehension.

- Play the recording from youtube for pupils to listen. Play the recording again for pupils to listen and circle the correct options.

- Tell pupils to swap books with a partner, then check the answers together as a class. Write the correct answers on the board.

- Tell pupils to return the books to their partners. Play the recording so that pupils can check their answers again.

- Extension: Invite one or two pupils to stand up, listen to and repeat the sentences.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

a. Objective: To read and understand a text (Bill’s letter) and circle the correct answers.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils’ attention to Bill’s letter and read it together as a class. Check comprehension.

- Draw pupils’ attention to the incomplete sentences and answer options. Have pupils pay attention to the gap and the three answer options for each sentence. Ask pupils to read the letter again and circle the correct options.

- Tell pupils to swap books with a partner, then check answers together as a class. Write the correct answers on the board.

- Tell pupils to return the books to their partners. Ask pupils to look at the board and check their answers again.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Activity 6. Project

a. Objective: To make birthday party invitations at home and present them to the class by using the target language.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils the goal of this activity. Explain that they are going to show the birthday party invitations that they have made at home and tell the class about their birthdays.

- Have pupils work in groups of five. Each pupil shows his / her invitation and tells the group about his / her birthday, e.g. My birthday’s in May. Go around the classroom and offer help where necessary (e.g. when pupils need some more vocabulary to talk about their birthdays).

- Invite some pupils to show their work and talk about their birthdays. Have pupils stick their invitations on the wall of the classroom as a display.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

- Pupils listen to the teacher's instructions regarding the project.



 

- Pupils work in small groups, present their homemade invitations, and practice speaking.

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To creatively apply the learned vocabulary (food, drinks) and structures ("I want some...") in a personalized, visual way.

Task: "My Dream Birthday Menu" (Home Assignment)

- Teacher gives each pupil a blank A4 paper. At home, pupils will design and draw a "Birthday Party Menu" for their dream birthday.

- Requirements:

+ Draw and color at least 2 things to eat and 2 things to drink.

+ Write clear labels under the drawings (e.g., chips, jam, water, lemonade).

+ Write a big title: [Pupil's Name]'s Birthday Menu.

- Teacher instructs pupils to use a safe search engine at home to find reference pictures of 2 basic food items and 2 drinks to inspire their drawings.

   

- Remind pupils to bring their results to the next class to show to their friends and present them.

* CONSOLIDATION:

- Teacher reviews the sounds j and w and key sentence patterns.

- Teacher praises the class for their active participation.

* ADVICE

- Review the vocabulary (January to May) and sentence structures learned today.
