UNIT 8: MY FAVOURITE SUBJECTS

Lesson 3 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Correctly repeat the sounds of the letters ke and te in isolation, in the words like and write, and in the sentences I like English. and Let's write.
  • Identify the target words like and write while listening.
  • Say the chant with the correct rhythm and pronunciation.
  • Read a paragraph and decide whether the sentences are true or false.
  • Read, understand and complete a paragraph about their favourite subjects.
  • Do a project surveying their classmates' favourite subjects and the reasons why they like these subjects, then present them to the class.

2. Competences

  • Critical thinking and creativity: learn how to read for specific information and write about their own preferences.
  • Communication and collaboration: work in pairs and groups to complete the learning tasks and the survey project.
  • Self-control & independent learning: perform pronunciation, reading, and writing tasks independently.

1. WARM-UP

a. Objective: To create a fun atmosphere, review the vocabulary about school subjects and the question "Why do you like...?", and lead into the new lesson.

b. Organisation:

- Teacher greets the class.

- Teacher asks the students to watch an AI-generated video designed to support the lesson and answer the questions that appear in the video.

- Teacher organizes a game called "Pass the Ball".

- Teacher plays some lively music. Pupils pass a small ball around the class.

- When the music stops, the pupil holding the ball stands up. Teacher asks: "What is your favourite subject?" and "Why do you like it?".

- The pupil answers (e.g., "My favourite subject is Art. Because I want to be a painter.").

- Repeat the game 4-5 times.

- Teacher praises the pupils and introduces the new lesson: "Today we will learn how to pronounce the sounds /k/ and /t/, read a story, and do a fun project about our favourite subjects."

a. Objective: To correctly repeat the sounds of the letters ke and te in isolation, in the words like and write, and in the sentences I like English. and Let's write.

Activity 2: Listen and circle.

a. Objective: To identify the target words like and write while listening.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils they are going to listen and circle the correct options. Get them to read the options and check their comprehension.

- Play the recording from youtube for pupils to listen. Play it again for pupils to listen and circle the correct options.

- Tell pupils to swap books with a partner, then check the answers together as a class. Write the correct answers on the board.

- Play the recording again for pupils to double-check their answers.

- Extension: Invite one or two pupils to stand up, listen to and repeat the sentences.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

Activity 4: Read and tick True or False.

a. Objective: To read a paragraph and decide whether the sentences are true or false.

b. Organisation:

- Have pupils read all the sentences under the paragraph. Tell them to read Sentence 1, pay attention to the keywords name and Peter, then scan the paragraph for the information. If it is the same, tick the True box. If not, tick the False box.

- The teacher shares a QR code on the smartboard linking to an interactive visual mini-game containing the True/False questions (eg., Wayground,...) to do the exercise.

   

   

- Invite some pupils to stand up and read the paragraph aloud.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

   

   

   

   

- Pupils read the sentences below the paragraph.

- Pupils read Sentence 1, scan the text, and tick True or False.



 

- Pupils use their tablets to scan the QR code, access the interactive visual mini-game, and select True or False for each sentence.

Activity 6: Project

a. Objective: To do a survey on their classmates' favourite subjects and the reasons why they like these subjects and present them to the class.

b. Organisation:

- Tell pupils the goal of the activity. Explain that they have to show their surveys prepared at home and present them to the class. (For this lesson, teacher will let them do a quick survey in class).

- Invite a pupil to the front to model the presentation. Put the key language on the board (e.g., Look at Bill. His favourite subject is maths. He likes it because he wants to be a maths teacher.). Have pupils repeat the language.

- The teacher sets up a simple collaborative digital poll (eg., Google Forms,...) with a visually appealing chart to collect data about the whole class's favourite subjects.

- Have pupils work in groups. Set a time limit for pupils to present their project in their groups. Each pupil describes his/her classmates' favourite subjects and reasons.

- Invite a few pupils to the front to present their projects. Encourage the class to cheer the presenters.

- Teacher moves on to the next content.

a. Objective: To review the phonics, vocabulary, and grammar structures learned in the lesson.

b. Organisation:

4. APPLICATION

a. Objective: To apply vocabulary about subjects, days, and activities to write a simple riddle without mentioning jobs, preparing for a guessing game in the next class.

b. Organisation:

Mission: "The Secret Subject Riddle"

- Teacher assigns homework: "Today, you will be a puzzle master! Write a secret riddle about your favourite subject on a small card/paper."

- Task requirements

+ Rule 1: Do NOT write the name of the subject in your sentences.

+ Rule 2: Write 3-4 sentences giving clues about your favourite subject. Tell us when you have it, what you do, and why you like it (without mentioning a job).

+ Example format on the board:

Clue 1: I have it on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Clue 2: I read texts and write words.

Clue 3: I like it because it is interesting and fun.

Question: What is my favourite subject? (Answer: English)

- The teacher projects a generative AI chatbot on the screen, inputs the example clues, and asks the AI: "Guess my favourite subject based on these clues" to demonstrate how AI can process information and solve simple problems.

- Tell pupils to decorate their riddle cards nicely.

- Explain that in the next lesson, they will read their riddles aloud, and the whole class will try to guess the correct subjects.

CONSOLIDATION

- Teacher reviews the sounds /k/ (like) and /t/ (write), and the sentence patterns to ask/answer about favourite subjects and reasons.

- Teacher comments on the class's performance.

ADVICE

- Practice saying the chant on page 60 at home.

- Finish the "Dream Timetable" poster.
