UNIT 6: OUR SCHOOL FACILITIES

Lesson 1 - 2 Period 

   

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge and skills

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Use the words city, mountains, town, village in relation to the topic "Our school facilities";
  • Use Where's your school? - It's in the ___. to ask and answer questions about the location of a school;
  • Listen to and demonstrate understanding of simple communicative contexts in relation to the topic "Our school facilities";
  • Read and write about school locations and facilities.

2. Competences

Critical thinking and creativity: learn how to identify and talk about school locations correctly.

Communication and collaboration: work in pairs and groups to complete the learning tasks.

Self-control & independent learning: perform listening, speaking, reading, and project tasks.

III. PROCEDURES

Game: “QUICK FLASH”

- Greet the class and encourage

pupils to respond.

- Teacher uses an AI image generator to quickly generate and flash digital pictures of a city, mountains, village, and town on the smart TV.

- Quickly flash a picture card (city,

mountains, village, or town) for one

second, then hide it.

- Ask: “What’s it?” and encourage

pupils to guess and say the word

- Repeat with the other cards and

stick them on the board.

- For the last card (e.g., mountains),

point to a small drawing of a school on it and ask: “Where’s your school?” to elicit the answer “It’s in the mountains”

- Write the title Our school facilities

on the board and smoothly lead into

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about the location of a school.

Activity 2. Listen, point and say.

a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use “Where's your school? - It's in the ___.” to ask and answer questions about the location of a school.

b. Organisation:

- Have pupils look at the pictures and elicit the locations of schools.

- Teacher identifies and resolves any simple technical problems with the audio output before playing the recording on the ebook.

- Have pupils point at Picture a (mountains), listen to the recording and repeat the word (mountains). Repeat the same procedure with Pictures b, c and d. Have the class repeat the words a few times.

   

   

   

   

   

   

   

   

   

   


- Point at the first bubble and have pupils listen to and repeat after the recording (Where's your school?). Point at Picture a and have pupils listen to and repeat after the recording (It's in the mountains.). Repeat the same procedure with the other three pictures.
- Divide the class into two groups to take turns repeating the question and the answer for Picture a until they feel confident. Repeat the same procedure with Pictures b, c and d.
- Put pupils in pairs and have them practise asking and answering with the pictures. Invite a few pairs to point at the pictures and say the questions and answers in front of the class. Correct their pronunciation where necessary.

Activity 4. Listen and number.
a. Objective: To listen to and understand four communicative contexts in which pupils ask and answer questions about school locations and number the correct pictures.
b. Organisation:
- Have pupils look at Activity 4. Ask them How many pictures are there? and What can you see in each picture? Draw pupils' attention to the boxes in the corners of the pictures. Check their comprehension.

- Play the recording of the first dialogue. Tell pupils that they will need to listen to the location (e.g. city, village, town, mountains). Ask pupils Where's the school? Help pupils find out the answer of the location in the dialogue. Then ask pupils in which picture the location town appears (Picture c). Tell pupils to write "1" in the box of Picture c.

   

   

   

   

- Play the recording of the other dialogues and allow pupils to write down their answers. Give pupils some minutes to swap books with a partner and then check the answers as a class. Correct the answers where necessary.
Extension: If time allows, play the recording, sentence by sentence, for the class to listen and repeat individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation if necessary.

- Pupils listen to the rest of the recording and number the remaining pictures. Swap books to check answers.

Activity 5. Look, complete and read.
a. Objective: To complete four target gapped exchanges with the help of picture cues.

Activity 6. Let's play.
a. Objective: To review the words of locations by playing the game Matching pairs.
 b. Organisation:
- Tell pupils that they are going to find four pairs of pictures and words as quickly as possible.

- Stick the picture cards face down in the left column and the word cards face down in the right column on the board.

- Invite one pupil to play the game by selecting a picture card and a word card, turning them over. If two cards are a matching pair, ask the pupil to say the word aloud. The pupil can continue to take another turn. If the cards do not make a match, ask the pupil to turn them face down again and invite another pupil to take the next turn.

- Teacher uses an AI pronunciation checker app on a smartphone/tablet connected to the TV to verify the pupil's pronunciation.

   

- Let pupils play the game until all pairs have been matched. Play the game several times if there is enough time.

a. Objective: To apply the learned vocabulary and structures to a real-life context.

b. Organisation:
Homework Task: "SCHOOL TOUR GUIDE"

- Teacher instructs pupils to record a short video (or take a photo) of their real school at home.

- Pupils must practice being a tour guide, pointing to their school and saying: "Hello. This is my school. It's in the (city/village/town/mountains)."

- Teacher instructs pupils to use a digital device to record the video and use basic features to add a title, expressing their ideas creatively.

- Pupils will send the video to the teacher or present their photo in the next class.
* CONSOLIDATION
- Teacher reviews and summarizes the main points of Lesson 1: vocabulary (mountains, village, city, town) and the structure "Where's your school? - It's in the...".
- Teacher praises active pupils and groups.
* ADVICE
- Review vocabulary and practice the structure at home.
