UNIT 9: OUR SPORTS DAY

Lesson 1 (2 periods)

   

I. OBJECTIVES 

1. Knowledge and skills 

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about a sports day.
  • Correctly say the words and use "Is your sports day in ___? - Yes, it is. / No, it isn't. It's in ___." to ask and answer questions about a sports day.
  • Listen to and understand three communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about a sports day and match three characters with three correct pictures.
  • Complete four target sentence patterns in four exchanges with the help of picture cues.
  • Sing the song "Our sports day" with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

2. PRESENTATION

Activity 1: Look, listen and repeat

a. Objective: To understand and correctly repeat the sentences in two communicative contexts focusing on asking and answering questions about a sports day.

b. Organisation:

- Have pupils look at Pictures a and b and identify the characters in the pictures (Lucy and Nam).

- Ask pupils to look at Picture a. Play the recording from youtube for them to listen. Play the recording again, sentence by sentence, for pupils to listen and repeat. Repeat the same procedure with Picture b. Correct their pronunciation where necessary.

- Play the recording again for pupils to listen to and repeat individually and / or in chorus sentence by sentence.

- Invite a few pairs to the front of the classroom to listen to and repeat the sentences in the recording.

- Draw their attention to the question Is your sports day in May too? and the answer No, it isn't. It's in April. Tell pupils that they are used to ask and answer questions about a sports day.

- Pupils look at the pictures, identify characters and the context.

Context a:

Lucy: Our sports day is in May. We play many sports and games.

Nam: Great! I like sports.

Context b:

Lucy: Is your sports day in May too?

Nam: No, it isn't. It's in April.

   

   

- Pupils listen to the recording and follow along. Pupils pay attention to their pronunciation.




 

- Pupils repeat in chorus and individually.

   

- Pairs go to the front and role-play the exchanges.

   

- Pupils listen to the teacher's explanation on the target structure.

   

 

Activity 2: Listen, point and say

a. Objective: To correctly say the words and use Is your sports day in ___? – Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t. It’s in ___. to ask and answer questions about a sports day.

Activity 3: Let's talk.

a. Objective: To enhance the correct use of Is your sports day in ___? – Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t. It’s in ___. to ask and answer questions about a sports day.

b. Organisation:

- Draw pupils’ attention to the picture. Have them say the names of the months in the picture. Ask questions to help them identify the context.

- Have pupils look at the bubbles to understand how the sentence pattern is used. Have pupils role-play to practise asking the questions and giving their answers in pairs, using picture cues. Make sure pupils understand the structures and say them with the right pronunciation and intonation. Go around to observe and provide help.

- Teacher sets up a collaborative digital board (e.g., Padlet) and instructs pairs to record their asked/answered questions via text or

audio.

- Extension: For a more able class, have pupils ask and answer questions about what their friend(s) do on school sports day, using the structures learnt e.g. What do you do on sports day? – I ___.

a. Objective: To listen to and understand three communicative contexts in which characters ask and answer questions about a sports day and match three characters with three correct pictures.

Activity 5: Look, complete and read.

a. Objective: To complete four target sentence patterns in four exchanges with the help of picture cues.

b. Organisation:

- Have pupils look at the pictures and identify the months.

- Have pupils look at the four gapped exchanges. Draw their attention to the missing words in the sentences.

- Model Exchange 1. Have pupils look at the exchange. Ask them what words are missing in the answer (it is). Then have them look at the picture and identify the month. Ask them to complete the gap (Is your sports day in June? – Yes, it is.).

- Repeat the same procedure with Exchanges 2, 3 and 4. Draw pupils’ attention to two gaps in Exchanges 3 and 4.

- Have pupils complete the exchanges individually and ask a few pairs to read them aloud. Correct their pronunciation where necessary, praise the readers, and get the class to clap or cheer if their pronunciation is good.

- Pupils observe the gapped sentences.

- Pupils work independently to read and fill in the missing words. Then pairs read the exchanges aloud in front of the class.

a. Objective: To sing the song Our sports day with the correct pronunciation, rhythm and melody.

3. PRACTICE

a. Objective: To consolidate the target sentence structures in a simple, focused, and understandable written format.

b. Organisation:

Mission 1: "Read and Complete"

- Teacher prepares a worksheet or writes the exercise on the board.

- Teacher draws pupils' attention to the Word Bank and explains that they only need to use these familiar words to complete the sentences.

- Teacher gives pupils 4-5 minutes to work independently and fill in the blanks.

- Teacher goes around the classroom to observe and offer support to weaker pupils.

- Teacher invites 5 pupils to stand up, read the completed exchanges aloud, and write the answers on the board.

- Teacher checks with the whole class, corrects pronunciation if needed, and confirms the final answers.

Mission 2: Complete the quiz (optional).

- Teacher sends link the quiz on website  kenhhoctap for student to perform.

- Teacher gives pupils 5 minutes to choose the correct answer.

- Teacher calls out pupils to share their answers and explain the correct ones.
